Description
Chie Hori is a human character known primarily for her work as a freelance photographer and an information broker within the world of Tokyo Ghoul. She is a long-time friend and associate of Shuu Tsukiyama, having met him during their time attending the same high school. Despite being a human with no superhuman physical abilities, she is aware of Tsukiyama’s true nature as a Ghoul. Her small stature and youthful, round face give her the appearance of a child, which often leads others to mistake her for an elementary school student even though she is an adult.
Hori possesses a personality that is as eccentric as it is fearless. Her defining trait is an intense, almost obsessive curiosity and a drive to capture interesting moments with her camera, regardless of how dangerous or macabre the setting. This was first demonstrated during her initial encounter with Tsukiyama when she photographed him in the act of feeding on a victim. Instead of showing fear or attempting to flee, she calmly demanded he take her out for dessert. She rarely shows extreme emotion or distress, even when facing death, and speaks in a blunt, direct, and often sarcastic manner. Her carefree and unreserved attitude allows her to trespass, hack systems, and negotiate with dangerous individuals without hesitation.
Her primary motivation is not financial gain or morality, but the pursuit of compelling images. She seeks out a scoop or a perfect photograph, finding fascination in the unusual behaviors of both humans and Ghouls. This drive extends to her interest in other characters, such as Haise Sasaki, whom she finds interesting as a subject. She acts as an informant to facilitate access to these interesting moments, rather than out of a firm allegiance to either the human or Ghoul factions.
Chie Hori plays a crucial supporting role in the story, acting as a catalyst and a source of critical information. Initially, her role is defined by her unique friendship with Shuu Tsukiyama, whom she considers her best photography model. She later serves as an informant for Ken Kaneki’s group at Tsukiyama’s request, providing valuable data like the list of prisoners freed by Aogiri Tree, which required hacking into the CCG's database. In a later arc, she approaches members of the Quinx Squad, offering to sell them information on the serial killer Torso. Her price for this information is either a large sum of money or a personal belonging of Haise Sasaki, whom she wanted to use to cheer up and make her model, Tsukiyama, interesting again.
Her key relationships define many of her actions. Her bond with Shuu Tsukiyama is the most significant. Tsukiyama sees her as a unique pet, often calling her little mouse, while she views him as a fascinating collaborator. She shows genuine care for his well-being, working to pull him out of a deep depression. Her relationship with Tsukiyama’s servant, Kanae von Rosewald, is tense, as Kanae is jealous of her closeness to their master and threatens her, though Chie remains unfazed. While she collaborates with investigators like Kuki Urie and Ginshi Shirazu, she does so on her own terms, showing no intimidation from their authority.
Throughout her arc, Chie Hori shows little change in her core personality but demonstrates greater involvement in the central conflict. She evolves from a detached observer who simply photographs unusual events to a more active participant, hacking into CCG servers and aiding in rescue operations. By the final stages of the story, she is fully cooperating with the resistance group Black Goat, using her technical skills to help rescue characters like Tsukiyama.
Chie Hori’s most notable abilities are not combat-based but revolve around her technical skills and her disarming courage. She is an exceptionally skilled photographer with detailed knowledge of camera equipment and film, a skill she uses for both her art and her information gathering. She is also a capable hacker, able to breach the CCG's secure computer networks to obtain classified information, a feat that puts her on the organization's radar as a Ghoul supporter. Furthermore, she displays above-average agility; when she first fled from Tsukiyama, an S-rated Ghoul, her speed was such that he initially considered she might be a Ghoul or an investigator, concluding she was faster than an athletic marathon runner. Her true strength, however, lies in her remarkable composure and business savvy, allowing her to negotiate and gather intelligence in the most dangerous of circumstances.
