Description
Gretel Jeckeln is a character from the anime Schwarzes Marken, serving as the political commissar attached to the 666th Tactical Surface Fighter Squadron, known as the Schwarzesmarken. She holds the rank of Unterleutnant or first lieutenant, and her call sign within the unit is Schwarzes 04.

Standing at 165 centimeters tall with a birthday on July 12, Gretel is a young woman who often appears in her military uniform complemented by a pair of glasses. She is characterized by her long, straight black hair and blue or purple eyes.

Gretel’s primary role is to enforce the will of the Socialist Unity Party and ensure the absolute loyalty of the 666th Squadron’s pilots. In this capacity, she holds the highest political authority within the unit, which allows her to monitor all communications, override or countermand orders from the squadron captain, and even carry out summary executions for desertion. She takes her responsibility seriously and is responsible for relaying cockpit recordings and operational reports back to her superiors in Berlin. Her personality is marked by a strong sense of pride, intelligence, and a cunning nature, and she is described as both arrogant and idealistic. Though a sincere believer in socialism and the state of East Germany as an embodiment of equality, she is not a blind zealot; her time on the battlefield has taught her when to overlook minor infractions.

Despite her high authority, Gretel’s actual piloting skill is noted to be below the average of her squadron mates. Her true talents lie in her political acumen, which is considered excellent. Her character undergoes significant development as the story progresses. While she officially serves as a watchdog for the party, she shares the squadron’s deep-seated hatred for the Stasi, East Germany’s secret police. During the political turmoil and armed uprising in East Berlin, Gretel abandons her original role to side with Theodor Eberbach and Katia Waldheim, joining a resistance organization to fight against the Stasi. In one critical event, she is shot down during combat but survives. Later, she participates in a mission to destroy Stasi archives, an act that nearly costs her life, leaving her hospitalized.

Gretel’s key relationships are defined by her position. She has a complex dynamic with the squadron captain, Irisdina Bernhard, whom she is tasked with monitoring and can command by the party’s authority. However, aware of the Stasi’s dangerous plans, she ultimately chooses to support Irisdina’s faction. She also forms a crucial alliance with the protagonist, Theodor Eberbach, working alongside him to lead rebel attacks against their former superiors.
