Description
Captain Irisdina Bernhard, often called Iris, is the commanding officer of the 666th TSF Squadron, operating with the call sign Schwarzes-01. She carries the rank of Hauptmann, or captain, and is considered a decorated war hero from the Poland retreat, a conflict that has proven her exemplary leadership and tactical skills on the battlefield. Her philosophy on leadership is to lead by example, making her one of the first to enter dangerous situations during combat.
Irisdina is the daughter of diplomats and the sister of Jürgen Bernhard, with whom she shared a very close bond due to their parents often being absent. Her personal history is marked by a tragic and controversial act: she betrayed her own brother to the Stasi, the East German secret police, an act that earned her government favor but also caused her to be shunned by many of her peers. In truth, this betrayal was done under her brother’s instruction to protect the family, and she secretly inherited his will to fight against the regime. She is actively involved in a plot with various factions to overthrow the Stasi and eventually reunite East and West Germany, working to build her position of power to create a strong, independent East Germany.
Known for a cold and calculating demeanor, Irisdina has earned the nickname the Ice Queen. She is a staunch realist, believing firmly that sacrificing a few hundred lives to save a million is a justifiable price. Her priorities in battle are clear and strictly ordered: completion of the mission comes first, followed by the safety of her team, and lastly, her own life. Despite the officially atheistic stance of the Communist party under which she serves, she is a devout Christian. While she possesses a charismatic quality that attracts people to her ideals and allows her to forge unlikely alliances between disparate groups, she is deeply distrustful of the West, seeing them as a necessary ally but not a true friend.
Within the story, Irisdina leads her squadron through numerous high-risk operations, including laserjagd runs and Operation Neptune, all with the dual purpose of defeating the alien BETA threat and showcasing East Germany’s potential. A key part of the plot involves her capture by the Stasi officer Beatrix Brehme, during which she endures torture in isolation but remains resolute, refusing to reveal any information about the rebellion. Her eventual rescue is a pivotal moment. However, during the ensuing civil war, she intercepts Heinze Axmann, who is attempting to assassinate her ally, Katia Waldheim. Mortally wounded by a gunshot, her final request is to be taken to see a now-united Berlin. She dies peacefully in the arms of Theodor Eberbach, declaring that her dream of an undivided Germany has come true.
Key relationships include her deep bond with her late brother, Jürgen, whose will she strives to carry out; her rivalry with Beatrix Brehme; and her significant connection with Theodor Eberbach, to whom she expresses deep feelings before her death. She also plays a crucial role as a mentor and leader to Katia Waldheim, whom she sees as an unexpected but welcome catalyst for their revolution. Throughout the narrative, Irisdina shows little visible development in the sense of changing her core beliefs, but her role evolves from a secretive, pragmatic leader to a symbolic martyr for the cause of German reunification. Her death cements her status as a legendary figure who signaled the start of a new, free Germany.
In terms of notable abilities, Irisdina is renowned for her exceptional tactical acumen and leadership skills, which are credited as the main reasons for her squadron’s survival and success. She is a highly capable Tactical Surface Fighter pilot who is not afraid to enter the fray directly. Furthermore, she possesses sharp political instincts and the personal charisma necessary to build a secret coalition and influence the future of her country.
