Description
Palamedes is a supporting character in the anime Divine Gate who serves as a veteran member of the Knights of the Round, the elite fighting force personally loyal to the leader Arthur. He is an adult man from the Common World with short black hair and brown eyes, and he carries himself with the weariness and discipline of a career soldier. Before joining the Knights, he lived as a hired mercenary for a private military company and spent his days doing work he considered meaningless. During a terrorist incident, he was ordered to suppress the attackers without regard for hostages caught in the crossing, an order he could not accept. Arthur appeared at that moment, freed the hostages himself, and asked Palamedes to provide covering fire instead. After the operation ended, Palamedes quit the company and was welcomed into Arthur's circle, where he received the codename Palamedes and, for the first time, a place that gave his life purpose.

His personality is shaped by that background. He is plain-spoken, battle-hardened, and somewhat gruff, with little interest in politics or personal glory. What defines him is an almost absolute sense of loyalty. He believes that he can only repay the debt he owes Arthur through combat, and he openly states that his own justice is the same as Arthur's justice. He does not consider himself to be employed by the World Council or any larger institution; in his view, his only employer is his boss. This devotion is what eventually earns him the title of Holy Gunner within the Knights of the Round.

In the story, Palamedes functions as dependable heavy firepower among Arthur's forces, supporting the main characters during their journey toward the Divine Gate and standing ready to fight when the group is threatened. His relationship with Arthur is the emotional center of his character: Arthur gave him an identity and a reason to live, so Palamedes treats his duty as something that surpasses simple orders. Arthur affectionately refers to him as the old man, a sign of the familiar bond between them. He is also close friends with Gareth, another older knight, and the two share the camaraderie of veterans who have served together for a long time.

His development is tied to the strength of that loyalty. Over time, his pure devotion raises him from a rootless mercenary to a respected knight, and even in difficult moments his concern for Arthur's safety can push him to confront former comrades if he believes the boss is in danger. After Arthur goes missing, Palamedes remains unshakably devoted to him. He refuses offers to join other organizations, insists on following his own path, and eventually establishes his own private military company while keeping good relations with the new institutions of the Common World. Even when wounded in battle, he refuses to fall to his knees because he wants to be able to face Arthur properly when the boss returns.

His most notable ability is his use of the heavyweight gun-cannon type Driver called Beast, a massive firearm so heavy that no one other than him could even carry it. His marksmanship is highly precise, allowing him to pick out individual targets without harming nearby hostages. The Beast is also capable of a special shifting mode in which it takes on a revolving form and presents multiple gun muzzles at once, making Palamedes a devastating force in close combat encounters. He is also physically strong, with a noted talent for bench pressing. Combined with his soldier's instinct and complete reliability in battle, Palamedes stands out as one of Arthur's most steadfast supporters.
