Description
Kaede Kayano is introduced as a transfer student to Kunugigaoka Junior High School's Class 3-E, quickly becoming the neighbor and close friend of her classmate Nagisa Shiota. She is easily recognized by her petite stature and her distinctive green hair styled into two short ponytails that resemble animal ears. On the surface, her personality is cheerful, lively, and outgoing, making her a natural mood-maker and a supportive presence who often watches over her classmates from the background. This affable exterior, however, is a carefully constructed facade.

Behind her innocent appearance lies a much more complex and driven individual. Kayano is, in truth, a former child prodigy actress operating under a pseudonym. Her real name is Akari Yukimura, and she is the younger sister of Aguri Yukimura, the beloved former homeroom teacher of Class 3-E whose death is directly linked to the tentacled creature the class knows as Koro-sensei. Consumed by a desire for revenge, Kayano transferred into the very class tasked with killing him, using her exceptional acting skills to conceal her murderous intent and true identity for nearly an entire school year. Her motivation is singular and powerful: to personally kill Koro-sensei and avenge her sister.

Throughout most of the story, Kayano deliberately plays a supporting role. She is the student who gave Koro-sensei his name and she famously transformed Nagisa’s appearance by tying his hair into pigtails, a strategic move to create a more prominent "main character" to divert attention away from herself. Despite this self-deprecating act, she possesses high intelligence and a natural aptitude for assassination. Shiro, a key antagonist, identifies her as the student in Class 3-E with the most innate talent for killing. Her abilities are notably versatile. She is skilled in crafting weapons from her favorite sweets, most famously a pudding bomb, and later demonstrates a terrifying proficiency when she activates hidden tentacles implanted in her body, granting her immense speed and power in close-quarters combat. Her most defining trait, however, is her incredible willpower; she endures the agonizing pain of the experimental tentacles for over a year without any form of treatment or anyone in the class noticing.

Her key relationships are central to her development. Her closest bond is with Nagisa Shiota, who sits beside her and becomes her best friend and primary emotional anchor. It is through her interactions with Nagisa and the rest of Class 3-E that her hardened heart begins to change, a fact she realizes when she develops romantic feelings for him. Her relationship with Koro-sensei is the most complex; he is both her target and the teacher she has come to genuinely appreciate and care for. This internal conflict culminates in her dramatic confrontation with him, where her revenge plot is thwarted. After the tentacles that amplify her hatred are removed by Koro-sensei with Nagisa’s help, she is finally freed from her obsession.

This event marks a profound turning point in her development. Having abandoned her desire for revenge, Kayano openly admits she no longer wishes to act. The cheerful personality she fabricated for so long integrates fully into her true self. In the epilogue, seven years after the story's conclusion, she has grown taller and returned to her natural black hair, having successfully become an actress. She maintains her close friendships with her former classmates and continues to visit Koro-sensei's grave with them, demonstrating how far she has come from the vengeful girl she once was.
