TV-Series
Description
Koro-sensei is the homeroom teacher of Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School and the central figure of the series. He appears as a yellow, tentacled creature resembling an octopus, with a round head and a constant smile that often shifts color to reflect his mood. Before obtaining his current form, he was a human known as the Reaper, a world‑renowned assassin who grew up in poverty and sought power through killing. He was betrayed by a disciple he had trained and subsequently captured by the scientist Kotaro Yanagisawa, who performed antimatter experiments on him. During his captivity, he formed a deep bond with the lab assistant Aguri Yukimura, who showed him kindness. After she died from an injury he could not prevent, his antimatter body stabilized into his tentacled state, and he made her a promise to become a teacher. He later took responsibility for the destruction of part of the moon, creating a permanent crescent, and declared he would destroy Earth in one year unless his students assassinated him.
His personality is a blend of boundless enthusiasm, patience, and playful eccentricity. He is genuinely dedicated to his students, investing enormous effort into their education and personal growth. He can be easily flustered by trivial matters—such as his reaction to certain physical traits or his tendency to panic—but when his students are endangered, he shifts into a black‑colored, lethal state that recalls his past as the Reaper. His skin acts as a biological mood ring, turning orange, purple, green, or black depending on his emotions. His primary motivation is to fulfill his promise to Aguri by guiding Class 3‑E to realize their potential and to give them a meaningful goal through the act of assassinating him, preparing them for life beyond the classroom. He accepts that his body will disintegrate in March, yet he chooses to spend his remaining time teaching.
As both mentor and target, Koro-sensei drives the story. He instructs the students in every academic subject and teaches them assassination techniques, while the government and other forces attempt to eliminate him. He challenges the school’s discriminatory system that marginalizes the students of Class 3‑E. His key relationships include his students, especially Nagisa Shiota, Karma Akabane, and Kaede Kayano, each of whom he encourages in unique ways. He also has a fraught connection with his former disciple, now the new Reaper, and with his friend Aguri, whose memory defines his purpose. His development is marked by a gradual shift from a cold assassin to a caring teacher who learns from his students as much as they learn from him. In the final confrontation, having been weakened, he allows Nagisa to deliver the killing blow, leaving his students with a final lesson in courage and gratitude. His legacy continues to shape their lives long after his death.
Koro-sensei possesses an extraordinary array of abilities. His primary asset is his speed, which reaches Mach 20, complemented by superhuman reflexes and the capacity to generate tangible after‑images. His body is extremely durable and can regenerate lost tentacles or severe injuries almost instantly as long as his heart remains intact. He can produce sticky mucus for protection and adhesion, and he can manipulate his shape into various forms, including a liquid state. His senses—particularly smell and hearing—are far beyond human levels. He can digest nearly any substance and resist most toxins. He has an Absolute Defense form that condenses his body into an indestructible sphere for twenty‑four hours, after which he gains the ability to fire energy lasers. He also undergoes a monthly molting process that sheds his skin and recharges his strength. Intellectually, he possesses a photographic memory, mastery over every academic subject, and skills in chemistry and engineering that allow him to upgrade technology and develop specialized formulas. These abilities make him an almost impossible target, yet he uses them primarily to teach and protect his students until the moment of his inevitable end.
