Description
Irina Jelavich is a professional assassin and contract killer who is assigned to teach English at Kunugigaoka Junior High School`s Class 3-E as a cover for her primary mission to eliminate the tentacle-like creature known as Korosensei. She is a young woman of Serbian descent, approximately twenty years old at the start of the story, with a tall and curvaceous figure, long wavy blonde hair, and light blue eyes. Her fashion sense is notably flamboyant and revealing, often consisting of outfits that emphasize her physique.

Irina`s background is marked by profound tragedy; she witnessed the murder of her parents during a civil conflict in her homeland as a child. At around twelve years old, she killed the attacker herself and was subsequently found wandering in the ruins, traumatized and alone. She was taken in and trained as an assassin by an older couple, Lovro and Olga Brovski, who taught her not only the art of killing but specifically the techniques of infiltration, seduction, and multilingual conversation as tools for her trade. This harsh upbringing left her deeply unfamiliar with ordinary life and prone to social awkwardness despite her adult appearance.

Her personality is initially defined by arrogance and contempt, particularly toward the students of Class 3-E, whom she dismisses as useless children who are beneath her. She is highly confident in her skills and beauty, which she wields unapologetically, and has a tendency to be boastful and flashy. Her professional methods rely heavily on manipulating and deceiving targets, making her wily and calculating. However, many of these traits serve as a mask for significant social immaturity and deep-seated insecurity stemming from her unconventional upbringing in the world of assassination. She can be childish, prone to overreactions, and gets easily annoyed when students use the nickname Bitch-sensei (derived from the pronunciation of her last name).

Her central role in the story is that of a rival assassin and eventually a teacher to the students of Class 3-E. Having been hired by the Japanese government to kill Korosensei, her initial attempts to use seduction and conventional weapons fail spectacularly, leading to humiliation and a vow for revenge. Following her failures, the government agent Tadaomi Karasuma instructs her that if she wishes to continue her mission, she must genuinely commit to her role as an educator. This marks a turning point where she begins to take teaching seriously, using her real-world expertise to instruct the students in foreign languages and, more uniquely, in the art of conversation, social manipulation, and seduction for espionage purposes.

Key relationships define her development. Her dynamic with Karasuma evolves from mutual professional disdain to a one-sided romantic interest on her part, which she expresses through clumsy seduction attempts and visible disappointment when he forgets important dates. This bond deepens through shared trials, eventually leading to their marriage after the main events of the story. Her relationship with the students also transforms completely; she goes from viewing them as mere tools to becoming a protective and invested teacher. She shares specific bonds with female students who seek her advice on charm and with Nagisa Shiota, whom she recognizes as having a natural talent for the deadly arts she practices. Her relationship with her mentor, Lovro, reappears as a test of her commitment when her growing attachment to the class comes into conflict with her identity as an assassin.

Regarding personal development, Irina undergoes a profound transformation from a cold-blooded killer motivated solely by her mission into a dedicated educator who eventually retires from assassination. She gradually sheds her arrogance, apologizes for her initial behavior, and learns to appreciate the value of teamwork and the bonds she forms with the class. A significant crisis occurs during the Reaper incident, where she briefly betrays the class, feeling that fulfilling her mission is the only way to justify her existence. However, after being rescued by Karasuma and forgiven by the students, she reconciles and fully embraces her role. Following the conclusion of the academic year, she joins Japan`s Ministry of Defense as an intelligence operative and marries Karasuma, finally balancing her lethal professional skills with a fulfilling personal life.

In terms of abilities, Irina is a highly successful professional assassin with a confirmed track record of numerous international kills. Her primary strengths are not physical combat but infiltration, planning, and psychological manipulation. She is fluent in ten languages, a skill she uses both for gathering information and for teaching. She is proficient with firearms and can wield heavy weapons with surprising strength. Her signature technique is the Kiss of Death, a method of incapacitating a target or delivering an item through a deep kiss, which she also teaches to students as a practical skill. She is skilled in setting elaborate traps and having contingency plans. Her main weaknesses are a potential over-reliance on her seduction techniques and being outmatched in head-to-head physical combat against a pure fighter like Karasuma. Her emotional immaturity, a product of her lost childhood, also occasionally clouds her professional judgment.
