Description
Gakushu Asano is a student in Class 3-A at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, where he holds the positions of student council president and leader of the school's top five students, known as the Five Virtuosos. He is the only son of Gakuho Asano, the school's influential chairman. Standing at 175 centimeters tall with a birthday on January 1st, he is a prodigy who consistently ranks first in national mock examinations and maintains the highest grades in his grade level.

On the surface, Gakushu presents the image of a refreshing and charismatic honor student. He is handsome, well-mannered, and earns the trust of teachers, peers, and even sponsors with his benevolent smile and eloquent speech. This public persona, however, masks a true nature that is highly arrogant, cunning, and manipulative. Driven by a powerful desire for control, he is not content with merely being the top student; his ambition extends to orchestrating the actions of those around him and ultimately seeking to dominate his own father, the chairman. He views relationships through a lens of hierarchy and utility, often treating his classmates in Class A as pawns in his strategic games, though he does show genuine care for them in his own way.

Gakushu's primary motivation stems from his complex, adversarial relationship with his father. The two refer to each other formally as "Asano-kun" and "Chairman," highlighting a relationship that is more like a cold rivalry than a loving family bond. Gakushu is deeply suspicious of the secrets his father is hiding regarding the special treatment of Class 3-E, the so-called "End Class" housed in a remote building. He seeks to uncover this secret, believing it will give him the leverage he needs to seize control from his father. However, he is also acutely aware of and fears his father's ruthless and punishing nature, which is directed at anyone who fails, including his own son.

In the story, Gakushu functions as the primary academic antagonist to Class 3-E, representing the pinnacle of the school's elitist and discriminatory system that his father created. His role is defined by a series of escalating challenges and wagers against the class. Initially, he looks down on them as inferior, but after suffering unexpected defeats in exam scores, a physical pole-toppling contest, and a cultural festival, his disdain evolves into a grudging recognition of their abilities. His most significant turning point occurs when his father brainwashes his friends and classmates, instilling in them a hatred for Class E to ensure victory. Horrified by this extreme measure, Gakushu makes the unprecedented decision to humble himself before his rivals, bowing to Class E and pleading with them to defeat his father's educational philosophy by outperforming Class A in the final exams.

Gakushu's key relationships are central to his character. His rivalry with Karma Akabane of Class 3-E is a defining one, as Karma is the only student who can match him in intellect and cunning. Their competition is intense and personal, culminating in Karma finally surpassing Gakushu in the rankings during the final exams. This defeat, while painful, helps Gakushu realize the flaws in his rigid, calculated approach to problems. With his father, the relationship undergoes a slow thaw after his public defiance. When Gakuho strikes him in anger, Gakushu calmly stands his ground, remarking that he finally feels like he is seeing his father, not just the chairman. After the conflict is resolved, their relationship begins to heal, and Gakushu eventually starts calling him "Dad". He also shares a close, if hierarchical, bond with the other members of the Five Virtuosos, who remain loyal to him even after repeated failures.

Throughout the series, Gakushu experiences significant development. He begins as a near-carbon copy of his father's cold, elitist ideology, believing that results are everything. His repeated losses to Class 3-E force him to question this worldview. He learns to value effort, camaraderie, and the idea of a fair fight, rejecting his father's increasingly underhanded tactics. By the end, he has rejected his father's oppressive system and is willing to fight to protect Class 3-E from media harassment, acknowledging them not as inferiors but as respected rivals and even friends.

Gakushu possesses a formidable array of abilities. Academically, he is a genius with a particular strength in mathematics, but he excels in all core subjects. He is also a polyglot, able to speak English, French, Portuguese, and Korean. Physically, he is far stronger than the average student, demonstrating martial arts skills that allow him to single-handedly hold his own against multiple members of Class 3-E, who have received assassination training. His true strength lies in his strategic mind, his deep knowledge of the law to craft binding contracts, and his exceptional leadership and organizational skills, which he uses to command the loyalty of his peers.
