Description
Licht Jekylland Todoroki, often referred to simply as Licht Todoroki, is a character from the anime Servamp. He is an eighteen-year-old renowned pianist from Vienna, Austria, and serves as the Eve of Lawless, the Servamp representing the sin of Greed. Born to an acclaimed Austrian pianist father and a Japanese violinist mother who grew up in France, Licht showed exceptional musical talent from an early age. His dedication to the piano is rooted in a promise he made to a childhood friend. During one of his first concerts, intense nervousness caused his hair to turn white temporarily; although most of it returned to black, a single white strand remained as a permanent reminder of the experience.
Licht possesses a deeply contradictory personality. On the surface, he often behaves like a naive child despite being an adult, and he genuinely believes himself to be an angel. This self-image leads him to view vampires as demons, and he becomes violently hostile toward them, attacking without hesitation. He is quick-tempered, impulsive, and prone to using brute force, which has earned him the nickname Violence Angel from others. At the same time, he has a gentle and innocent side, especially toward animals. He addresses them with respectful suffixes and once dreamed of being able to communicate with them. He is often described as denpa, meaning eccentric and disconnected from ordinary reality. Despite his immaturity, he displays moments of sharp insight, particularly regarding his Servamp, and holds a strong conviction that individuality comes from pursuing one’s desires wholeheartedly.
Licht’s primary motivation is to spread joy through his music and to uphold his identity as an angelic figure. He desires to help his allies, though his methods can be impractical. His role in the story is that of an Eve, a human who contracts with a Servamp, and he is paired with Lawless, the Servamp of Greed. The two have a volatile relationship. Licht first encountered Lawless while touring in Boston, finding him in hedgehog form and naming him Hyde. After accidentally forming a contract, Licht resented the bond and repeatedly tried to kill Lawless, whom he sees as a demon. However, due to the contract’s restrictions, they cannot separate beyond a certain distance, forcing them to coexist. Over time, their partnership evolves into one of reluctant trust, marked by frequent arguments but also remarkable synchronicity in combat. Licht pushes Lawless to confront his nihilistic outlook, while Lawless mocks Licht’s angelic delusions.
Licht also shares a significant bond with Mahiru Shirota, his master, who provides him with emotional stability and purpose. His interactions with other Servamps often challenge his optimistic worldview, as they present more cynical perspectives. Throughout the series, Licht undergoes development as he learns to balance his idealistic self-image with the darker realities of the Servamp world. He confronts the responsibilities and sacrifices inherent in being an Eve, notably during the arc involving the battle against other Eves.
As an Eve, Licht wields two Leads, which are special weapons granted by his contract. His primary Lead is a pair of black boots that enhance his kicking power, speed, and agility. Strikes from these boots slow the healing of vampires, making them effective in combat. His secondary Lead is a piano, which channels his music into various combat effects. Depending on the piece he plays, he can immobilize opponents, manipulate their memories, or reveal their past through a technique called Flashback. He can generate a temporary keyboard in midair or inscribe a keyboard onto an opponent’s body to send paralyzing vibrations. When fighting alongside Lawless, his music can amplify his Servamp’s power. They also perform a cooperative technique called Jekyll and Hyde, where they instantly swap positions during battle to create openings, and Phantom of the Opera, which temporarily boosts Lawless’s strength. Licht’s abilities are emotionally dependent; if he becomes disheartened, his powers weaken significantly.
Licht is physically described as slightly tall, with short black hair accented by a white strand on the left side, and grey eyes that appear blue in the anime. He often wears a black hoodie, white pants, black boots, and a white backpack shaped like angel wings, which reinforces his self-proclaimed identity. His hobbies include playing the piano, karaoke, and climbing trees. He enjoys sweet foods such as cream soda, melon, shaved ice, and cotton candy, and he dislikes jet lag. His contract chain is attached to his right ankle, unlike some other Eves whose chains are on the right wrist.
