Aaron Dismuke
Description
Aaron Dismuke is an American voice actor, ADR director, and script writer closely associated with English dubs produced by Funimation (now Crunchyroll). Born Aaron Mitchell Dismuke on October 13, 1992, in Tarrant County, Texas, he began his career in the industry at a very young age, facilitated by his cousin, fellow voice actor and director Justin Cook. He started voice acting at nine years old, with his debut roles in 2002 being Hiro Sohma and the young Akito Sohma in the initial Fruits Basket anime series.
Dismuke's most iconic early role came at the age of twelve when he was cast as Alphonse Elric in the English dub of the first Fullmetal Alchemist television series. This performance made him one of the few child voice actors in the field to portray a young boy character, a role typically filled by adult women. Due to his voice changing with puberty, he was unable to reprise the role of Alphonse for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, where he was succeeded by Maxey Whitehead. However, he remained involved with the series, providing the voice for a young Van Hohenheim, the Elric brothers' father.
Beyond acting, Dismuke has established a significant career behind the scenes as an ADR director and script writer. He has directed English dubs for numerous series, showcasing his versatility and understanding of the production process. His directorial credits include works such as Nanbaka, Shomin Sample, Tsugumomo, Cheer Boys!!, and notably, the romantic comedy Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, in which he also stars as the protagonist, Miyuki Shirogane. His work on the science-fiction series Dr. Stone also spans both acting and directing, as he voices the lead character Senku Ishigami while also serving as an ADR director for the show.
Dismuke's career is marked by a wide range of leading roles in popular anime, demonstrating his ability to voice characters from various genres. Some of his most prominent performances include the logical and brilliant Senku Ishigami in Dr. Stone, the proud student council president Miyuki Shirogane in Kaguya-sama: Love is War, the otaku Nishikata in Teasing Master Takagi-san, the quiet and anxious hero Tamaki Amajiki in My Hero Academia, the demon general Hanzo Urushihara in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!!, the strategic genius Reinhard von Lohengramm in Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These, and Prince Arslan in The Heroic Legend of Arslan. The extensive list of roles provided also includes characters such as Kakeru Manabe in Fruits Basket the Final, Suwa in MARS RED, William James Moriarty in Moriarty the Patriot, and many others, illustrating his prolific output, particularly from the late 2010s onward.
In 2022, Dismuke publicly shared that he would be stepping back from some voice-acting roles due to health issues related to COVID-19 and subsequent vocal rest, which led to him being temporarily replaced in series like Kaguya-sama: Love is War and Teasing Master Takagi-san. He later revealed that he had been diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia but, after receiving treatment, was assured that his vocal cords were not permanently damaged.
Throughout his career, Dismuke has been a consistent presence in the English dubbing industry, transitioning successfully from a celebrated child actor to a versatile adult performer and a key creative figure as a director. His body of work, encompassing acting, direction, and script adaptation, has made him a well-known and respected talent among fans of English-dubbed anime.
