Description
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu is a student of Class 77-B at Hope's Peak Academy, where he holds the title of the Ultimate Yakuza as the heir to the Kuzuryu clan. In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School: Despair Arc, he is shown in his first year at the academy, wearing the standard school uniform rather than the suit he is known for in other appearances. Fuyuhiko is a slim young man with a refined, youthful face and a short stature, features that make him self-conscious as he feels they contradict the imposing image expected of a yakuza leader. He has dusty blond crew-cut hair with curved lines shaved on each side, freckles across the bridge of his nose, a small birthmark near the right side of his mouth, and gold-colored eyes with permanent blush marks on his cheeks.
Fuyuhiko was born as the heir to the Kuzuryu yakuza family, a role he feels he does not deserve, believing his younger sister Natsumi would have been more worthy of the title. His childhood companion Peko Pekoyama, raised alongside him as his personal bodyguard and assassin, has always protected him, including during the violent fights between his parents that sometimes endangered him. Despite his family background, Fuyuhiko takes honor and moral codes seriously, opposing underage drinking, underage driving, and underage sex, and he is shown to be one of the few students who regularly attends class even though attendance is not required. During the Despair Arc, when his classmates are exposed to an aphrodisiac, he desperately tries to stop Kazuichi Soda from inappropriate behavior toward Sonia Nevermind, demonstrating his sense of propriety.
Fuyuhiko's personality at this stage is characterized by an aggressive and combative demeanor, which he uses to assert himself and compensate for his insecurities about his appearance and his status as a yakuza heir. He is easily angered, frequently insults others, and tends to keep people at a distance, claiming he has no interest in friendships. Beneath this harsh exterior, however, he has self-esteem issues and secretly enjoys eating sweets such as fried dough cookies, which he considers unmanly and tries to keep hidden. He also lacks the traditional yakuza tattoos and feels shame about this as well. His goal is to become genuinely strong on his own merits rather than relying on his family's name and power.
Along with the rest of Class 77-B, Fuyuhiko is eventually subjected to Junko Enoshima's brainwashing, forced to watch a video of Chiaki Nanami's execution that plunges the entire class into despair. As a member of Ultimate Despair, he and Peko enter the Japanese Diet building and slaughter everyone inside. After Junko Enoshima's execution, Fuyuhiko takes her right eye and attaches it to his own eye socket. Later, as one of the Remnants of Despair, he is placed into the Neo World Program in an attempt to restore his hope, an experience that leads him to eventually decide to atone for his sins alongside his classmates.
