Description
Belo is one of the three youkai-ningen, or humanoid monsters, who protect humanity while harboring the desire to become human themselves. His characterization has evolved across different adaptations, with the most prominent version appearing in the 2019 anime series and its film continuation, BEM: BECOME HUMAN.
In the 2019 adaptation, Belo is portrayed as a cynical and cool-headed preteen or teenager who deliberately keeps his distance from human society. He is often seen wearing headphones, which serves as a physical and symbolic barrier to block out the world around him and maintain a sense of separation from people. Much of his time is spent at arcades, immersing himself in gaming as a form of escape from the cramped and inconvenient life of being a youkai-ningen. His outward demeanor is characterized by sarcasm and ironic remarks, particularly toward his companions Bem and Bela. However, this aloof exterior masks a deep and genuine care for their well-being, as he is always thoughtful in ensuring they do not get hurt by his words or by the harsh realities they face.
Despite his reluctance to form bonds with humans, Belo possesses a strong moral core and is committed to fighting evil. He acts as the trio’s agile fighter, relying on his speed and dexterity in combat. Unlike his counterparts Bem and Bela, who wield elemental powers of lightning and ice respectively, Belo is initially described as having no special elemental ability beyond his superhuman agility. However, he does demonstrate several notable powers, including pyrokinesis, which allows him to ignite his body or limbs in flames. His other abilities include teleportation, the creation of illusions, and extremely keen hearing, which can pick up sounds from events happening blocks away. As a youkai-ningen, he can also transform at will from his human guise, which features distinctive white hair and small fangs, into a more monstrous and non-human form.
In the film BEM: BECOME HUMAN, which is set two years after the events of the 2019 television series, Belo is shown operating independently after the trio separates. Reflecting his more proactive nature, he is the one who has remained active in the shadows, investigating the suspicious activities of the Doracho Chemicals company from the city’s underworld. While he initially remains reluctant to assist humans directly, his solo pursuit of the truth demonstrates a continued commitment to exposing corruption and protecting others from harm. Eventually, he reunites with Bem and Bela for the climactic final battle, signaling a shift away from the isolation he had embraced. This arc cements his role as the cynical yet ultimately loyal member of the trio, whose journey involves learning to re-engage with the world and his found family.
