TV-Series
Description
Hiro Sohma is one of the younger members of the Sohma family, bearing the curse of the Sheep in the Chinese Zodiac. This means he transforms into a sheep when embraced by someone of the opposite sex or when his body undergoes significant physical stress. He is around twelve to thirteen years old during the main events of the story, with short, spiky brown hair and brown eyes. Despite his youth, he is often described as being tall for his age and takes great care in his appearance, preferring neatly tailored clothing and disliking slovenliness.

Hiro’s personality is defined by a sharp tongue and a prickly, confrontational demeanor. He is intelligent and articulate, often using sophisticated or pretentiously large words to argue and deliver sarcastic, insulting remarks to those around him. This behavior makes him seem older than he is, but it frequently masks his insecurities and earns him a reputation for being somewhat unlikable at first. He is easily riled up and can talk circles around most adults, yet he is not without self-awareness. Hiro often regrets his harsh words shortly after saying them and hates himself for picking trivial fights, though he struggles to apologize or express his true feelings honestly.

The primary driving force behind Hiro’s actions is a profound guilt and a desperate desire to mature. His story is deeply rooted in his feelings for Kisa Sohma, the Tiger of the Zodiac, whom he loves more than anything. In his childhood, he confessed this love to the family head, Akito Sohma. Akito responded with a violent rage, severely beating Kisa and hospitalizing her. This event left Hiro consumed by guilt, believing he was directly responsible for her pain. In an attempt to protect her from further harm, he began to distance himself from Kisa, even as she suffered merciless bullying from her classmates at school. This left him feeling powerless and useless. Later in the story, he accidentally witnesses Akito pushing another family member, Isuzu Sohma, out of a window. Akito forces him to remain silent about the incident, adding another layer of guilt and inner turmoil that he must bear alone.

Hiro’s role in the story is initially that of an antagonist to the protagonist, Tohru Honda. He is openly rude and hostile towards her, even going so far as to steal a wallet containing a photograph of her late mother. His resentment stems from jealousy; Tohru was able to befriend and comfort Kisa when Hiro felt he could not, essentially doing what he most wished to do but felt he was unworthy of. His hostility forces a direct confrontation with Tohru, where he voices his self-hatred for being a powerless child who could not protect Kisa. In a key moment, Tohru responds with compassion, telling him that his ability to admit he is still a child is a sign of courage and that this bravery will one day allow him to become a "prince" who can always protect Kisa.

Hiro’s relationships are central to his development. His bond with Kisa Sohma is his most significant, evolving from a childhood friendship into a deep devotion. He is extremely kind and loving towards her, but also shows a "tsundere" personality, becoming shy and timid around her and having trouble expressing his affection directly. He shares a uniquely strong and loving relationship with his mother, Satsuki Sohma, which is rare among the cursed family members. Unlike many other mothers who rejected or feared their cursed children, Satsuki openly accepted and loved Hiro, which is a partial source of his strength. His desire to be strong enough to protect his ditzy and clumsy mother also contributed to his brash personality. When his baby sister, Hinata, is born, Hiro undergoes another significant change, becoming a doting and loving older brother who is deeply protective of her.

Hiro also holds others in high regard. He deeply admires Hatsuharu Sohma, whom he affectionately calls "Haru-nii" (Big Brother Haru) and sees as a role model for true kindness. His relationship with Kyo Sohma is initially antagonistic, with the two regularly exchanging heated arguments. However, towards the end of the series, this relationship warms, and Hiro comes to view Kyo as an older brother figure.

His development throughout the series is a gradual journey from a defensive, bitter child to a more compassionate and reliable young man. While he never completely loses his sarcastic edge, he actively works to change for the better, both for his own sake and for the sake of those he loves. The birth of his sister, Hinata, gives him a new perspective on his own vanity and fears, motivating him to become a true protector. This internal resolve contributes to his curse being broken relatively early compared to the other zodiac members. The first thing he does upon gaining his freedom is to hug his baby sister, an act that symbolizes his emotional and supernatural emancipation. By the end of the story, Hiro has mellowed into a much gentler and more considerate person, and his relationship with Kisa is implied to have grown into a mutual romantic future.
