Description
Ouri Kagami is a 16-year-old male protagonist and orphan raised at the Dai-Rin Orphanage beside Sekku Temple by the Buddhist monk Keisei Tagami, whom he views as an older brother despite no blood relation. His origins stem from being found by Keisei at age three after a hit-and-run accident killed his pregnant mother; she briefly returned as a regret-animated Shikabane corpse to ensure his birth, creating ambiguity about whether Ouri is fully human, Shikabane, or a hybrid.

Exposure to temple funerals fostered an unusual preoccupation with death during his childhood, earning him the nickname "Hanagami." Initially passive and introspective, he avoids conflict while balancing part-time work and high school. His perceptive, empathetic nature draws him to follow a mysterious talking black cat that guides him to Shikabane encounters, hinting at an innate supernatural connection. Characterized as introverted, adaptable, and peace-seeking (Enneagram Type 9w1), he tends toward hesitation yet possesses underlying resilience.

A pivotal shift occurs when Keisei dies battling the Shikabane Akasha, transferring his glowing red seal "blood oath" contract with the Shikabane Hime Makina Hoshimura to Ouri. This compels the 16-year-old to abandon his ordinary life and become Makina's Contracted Monk, responsible for sustaining her existence and aiding her mission to eliminate 108 Shikabanes. He undergoes rigorous physical and spiritual training at Mount Goryo under monks Kanechika Umehara and Touma Sawamiya, learning to wield a shakujō staff.

His relationship with Makina evolves from initial concern over her link to Keisei into a partnership defined by mutual protection. While Makina initially tries to distance him from danger, Ouri grows increasingly committed to supporting her vengeance quest against the Seven Stars—the Shikabanes who murdered her family. Their dynamic carries romantic undertones observed by others, contrasting Makina's earlier unrequited feelings for Keisei.

Ouri's hybrid nature influences interactions with other Shikabane Hime, notably allowing him to comfort Minai Ruo regarding her guilt. His unique ability to perceive and communicate with Shikabanes further sets him apart from other monks. Key traits include a preference for sweets (especially anko), milk, and cats; an aversion to strong spices; and a tendency toward unlucky outcomes.
