Description
Ouri Kagami is a central male character in the anime Corpse Princess: Aka. He is an ordinary high school student who grew up at the Dai-Rin Orphanage, located across from the Sekku Temple, where he was cared for by the monk Keisei Tagami, his adopted older brother. Because he lived at a shrine surrounded by other orphans, he was already familiar with death and Buddhist practices, but he was not prepared for the hidden world of the Shikabane, corpses revived by regret and dark desires, or for the Shikabane Hime, undead girls who hunt them.

At the beginning of the story, Ouri is a regular boy who is drawn into a series of incidents involving the Shikabane through his connection to Keisei and through his encounters with Makina Hoshimura, a Shikabane Hime. He is deeply shocked when he witnesses Keisei seemingly revive the scarred corpse of a schoolgirl, an act that reveals the supernatural reality behind his brother's quiet life. From that point, his ordinary existence slowly gives way to involvement in the ongoing conflict between the Shikabane and those who oppose them.

After his brother's death, Ouri inherits Keisei's duty and becomes the contracted monk of Makina Hoshimura, serving as her partner and support in battle. As a contracted monk associated with the Kōgon Sect, his role is not to fight directly like Makina does, but to aid her through spiritual means. His abilities are tied to this support role: he can sense the presence of Shikabane even when they appear ordinary, and he uses Buddhist implements, prayers, and barrier techniques to restrain or weaken Shikabane so that Makina can destroy them. He begins with little skill and confidence, but he steadily becomes more capable as he is tested by the dangers around him.

Personally, Ouri is kind-hearted and caring, with an unusual attachment to the darker side of death that sets him apart from other ordinary students. He is moved by the suffering of others and does not want innocent people to be hurt, which drives him to accept the burden of his role despite its risks. As the story progresses, he matures into a more determined and dependable person, but he keeps his compassion, especially toward Makina. He sees her not as a weapon but as a person worthy of protection and redemption, and his commitment to standing beside her becomes the emotional core of his character.

His motivations are shaped by loyalty to the people he loves and by a growing need to understand the truth of his own past. As his involvement with the Shikabane deepens, he slowly learns the truth about his hidden history, the meaning of the mysterious black cat, and the large organization responsible for the creation of the Shikabane. These revelations give his development an additional layer, forcing him to reconcile the ordinary boy he believed himself to be with the circumstances that actually shaped his life.

His most important relationship is with Makina Hoshimura. Their bond is both practical and personal, as he supports her in battle while also trying to ease the emotional weight of her violent existence. His relationship with Keisei Tagami is equally foundational, since Keisei raised him, trained him in spiritual matters, and left him the role of Makina's contracted monk. Through his ties to the Kōgon Sect, he also comes into contact with other contracted monks and Corpse Princesses, whose differing views on duty and salvation influence his own path.

Over the course of Corpse Princess: Aka, Ouri develops from a passive and somewhat uncertain bystander into an active and reliable partner. He gains skill in his spiritual abilities, faces the painful truths of his origins, and grows stronger in his resolve to protect Makina and share the weight of her mission. He remains a character whose strength lies less in physical combat and more in empathy, courage, and the willingness to take responsibility for another person's fate.
