Description
Chihiro Furuya is the central protagonist of the story, a fifteen-year-old first-year student at an all-boys high school who lives with his family at a Buddhist temple. He is a young man with a noticeably disheveled style of black hair, the points of which often curl upward in a way that resembles cat ears, which is his most distinctive physical trait. He typically has a relaxed, laid-back demeanor and droopy eyes, and his wardrobe usually consists of his school uniform.
Chihiro is defined by an all-consuming and lifelong passion for zombies, a fascination he has held since childhood. His obsession extends to collecting zombie films, games, and manga to the point where his ultimate dream is to have a zombie girlfriend, showing no romantic interest in living girls. However, this enthusiasm has notable limits, as he is paradoxically terrified of ghosts and haunted houses, which fall under the category of live horror. His personality is generally apathetic and lazy, disliking work and being considered irresponsible by his family, yet he is also quick-witted and capable of direct, effective speech when the situation demands it. Beneath his unusual fixations, he has a strong sense of responsibility when he commits to a course of action, as well as a fundamental inability to accept the death of those he cares about.
The core motivation driving Chihiro is grief and a refusal to accept loss. Following the accidental death of his beloved pet cat, Babu, Chihiro becomes determined to resurrect him. He discovers a centuries-old manuscript belonging to his eccentric grandfather that contains notes on creating a resurrection potion. This quest for a way to overcome death defines his actions, leading him to frequent an abandoned building where he can secretly conduct his experiments. This personal quest soon becomes intertwined with his relationship with Rea Sanka, a girl he meets at the ruins, to whom he makes a solemn promise to take responsibility for her if she ever becomes a zombie.
His most significant relationship is with Rea Sanka, who after drinking a sample of his potion and subsequently dying in a fall, is resurrected as a zombie. Chihiro fulfills his promise by taking her into his home to study her condition and protect her, a situation that transforms his abstract fantasy into a daily reality of responsibility and danger. Another central relationship is with his cousin, Ranko Saouji, who harbors romantic feelings for him and maintains a teasing, competitive dynamic with him, often in rivalry with Rea for his attention. Within his own family, he lives with his father, the temple priest; his younger sister Mero, who is interested in ghosts; and his senile grandfather Jogoro, the original author of the resurrection manuscript, who occasionally provides crucial advice in his moments of clarity.
Throughout the narrative, Chihiro undergoes significant development, maturing from a socially awkward dreamer into a more serious and responsible individual. The initial fulfillment of his dream of having a zombie companion confronts him with the grim realities of decay and the danger of his beloved zombie losing her humanity to her instincts. This forces him to take on the weighty task of caring for Rea, conducting research to preserve her body and consciousness, effectively becoming her guardian against a world that would not understand her. His journey also involves uncovering dark family secrets, including the truth about his own mother, who was also a zombie, which provides a tragic context for his obsession.
Chihiro does not possess supernatural powers of his own initially. However, after being bitten by the zombified Rea, he is infected with the hydrangea poison from the resurrection potion, which temporarily grants him enhanced physical abilities and an increased resistance to death, allowing him to survive otherwise fatal injuries. His primary abilities are his extensive, self-taught knowledge of zombies and the alchemical formula for the resurrection potion, which he successfully recreates from his grandfather's ancient texts. This expertise allows him to be the one person who understands Rea's condition and what she needs to survive.
