Description
Elan Ceres is a name shared by several individuals in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, all of whom are tied to the powerful Peil Technologies corporation. The identity is a public facade used by the company, concealing a line of experimental subjects known as Enhanced Persons and their original template.

The person initially introduced as Elan Ceres is designated Enhanced Person Number 4. He is a third-year student at the Asticassia School of Technology and serves as the top pilot for Peil House. His background is one of tragedy; he was forcibly taken by Peil Technologies, who erased his memories, surgically altered his face to match a template, and subjected him to physical enhancement to withstand the data storms produced by Gundam-type mobile suits. This process left him with a deep sense of loss, as his earliest and only fragment of memory is of celebrating his first birthday with a woman, likely his mother.

Number 4 has a taciturn and solitary personality, rarely opening his heart to anyone. He is known for being stoic and aloof, which has earned him a reputation among some female students as an "ice prince." Despite this exterior, he is highly intelligent and perceptive, and he shows an indifference to the societal prejudice against Gundams and their pilots, unlike many of his peers.

His primary motivation is a search for someone who shares his own cursed existence as a Gundam pilot. He initially approaches Suletta Mercury out of a belief that she is like him, someone suffering because of the GUND-Format technology. This curiosity leads him to make unusually proactive social overtures, such as asking for her contact information and inviting her to join his house. However, his motivations are complex and shift dramatically when he learns the truth. After piloting Suletta's Gundam Aerial and discovering that it does not inflict the same agonizing data storms he endures, his interest turns to bitter jealousy. He feels betrayed that she possesses everything he lacks, leading him to reject her with loathing. This culminates in a duel where he wagers his position as a duelist for the chance to obtain the Aerial, but he is defeated.

Following his defeat, Number 4 regains some of his lost memories and shares a moment of reconciliation with Suletta. Tragically, Peil Technologies, considering him a failed asset, disposes of him. Even after his death, a remnant of his consciousness is suggested to exist within the data storm of the Quiet Zero system, where it aids Suletta in a later crisis.

The person known as Elan Ceres is later replaced by Enhanced Person Number 5. In stark contrast to his predecessor, Number 5 is far more talkative and sociable, often presenting a cheerful and charming demeanor. The Peil CEOs note that he possesses a twisted personality similar to the real Elan Ceres. Number 5's defining characteristic is his powerful sense of self-preservation; unlike Number 4, he refuses to raise his Permet score in battle due to the mortal risk, as he does not want to die. He is sent to the academy specifically to seduce Suletta Mercury and gain control of the Aerial through manipulation. When his attempts to steal the Gundam fail, he flees Peil House to save his own life, seeking refuge with other outcasts. During this time, he develops a complex relationship with Norea Du Noc, a fellow Gundam pilot who shares his fear of death. He makes a desperate attempt to save her when she attacks the school, and her death leaves him in profound sorrow. Later, he exposes the secret of the Elan Ceres identity and aids in the final battle, and three years after the series' conclusion, he is shown traveling the Earth, following a path laid out by Norea's sketchbook.

There also exists the real Elan Ceres, the original person upon whom the Enhanced Persons are modeled. He is the chosen heir to Peil Technologies and holds the highest internal rank of "Peil Grade." He allows the Enhanced Persons to serve as his body doubles at the academy and as test pilots for the company's Gundams. He is more of a background figure, making a few direct appearances, but he ultimately resigns from Peil after the company's plans fail and is later headhunted by another firm.

As a mobile suit pilot, Elan Ceres is extraordinarily skilled. Number 4 has an official dueling record of eight wins and one loss. He pilots the XGF-02 Gundam Pharact, a prototype mobile suit equipped with long-range bombardment capabilities. His abilities are derived from his physical enhancements, which grant him a higher resistance to data storms than a normal person, allowing him to pilot a Gundam at all. Despite this, he still experiences the interface as an intensely painful violation, describing it as a hand roughly reaching into his brain. This stands in stark contrast to Suletta's natural, painless synchronization with the Aerial, a difference that becomes the core of his resentment and personal tragedy.
