Description
Maito Kamiya is a central character who first appears in the fifth episode of the anime Brave Beats as a new transfer student to the sixth-grade class of the protagonist, Hibiki Kazaguruma. Physically, he is a young boy of about thirteen years old with a quiet and mysterious demeanor, characterized by his blue hair and red eyes. He is immediately popular with his classmates due to his handsome appearance, and his talents extend to all areas, making him exceptionally skilled in both academics and sports. His proficiency in dance is also remarkable; his performances are described as beautiful and fantastical enough to captivate passersby.

Despite his near-perfect exterior, Maito’s personality is notably reserved and mature for his age. He remains calm in situations that would surprise others and initially keeps a distance from his peers, showing a particular, unexplained interest in Hibiki from the moment he arrives. This interest gradually reveals itself to be a complex mixture of connection and antagonism. As the story progresses, it is disclosed that Maito is the true identity of Choreo, the mysterious and powerful dancer who serves as the primary antagonist challenging the Brave Beats. As Choreo, his personality shifts to become cool and arrogant, and he is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals.

Maito’s motivations are deeply rooted in a tragic personal history. In reality, he is a boy from a distant, unspecified era, originally named Mai. He lived a difficult life caring for his sickly mother, maintaining hope through her constant smile despite her illness. After her condition worsened, he encountered the entity Bungabanga, who offered him a "smile magic" to cheer her up. When Maito performed this dance for his mother, it turned out to be a curse that transformed his hope into despair, leading to her death. Consumed by this loss and manipulated by Bungabanga, Maito lost his former self and became Choreo, setting out to collect Dance Tones, overthrow the Dance King, and plunge the universe into chaos as a means of expressing his own profound despair.

Within the narrative, Maito's role evolves from a seemingly perfect student to the secret villain and finally to a redeemed friend. As Choreo, he is a formidable adversary whose dance skills are so overwhelming that he easily defeats other heroes and steals all their Dance Tones, driving Hibiki into a deep depression. Maito's most significant relationship is with Hibiki, who sees him as a friend even after his betrayal. Hibiki’s unwavering determination to save Maito from his despair becomes the key to the final conflict. In their ultimate confrontation, the Brave Beats perform a healing dance that purifies Maito, freeing him from Bungabanga’s control and returning him to his original form.

Throughout the series, Maito undergoes significant development. He begins as a lonely boy hiding a tragic past, transforms into the villainous Choreo to spread the despair that consumed him, and is ultimately saved by the power of friendship and dance. After being purified, he returns to a normal life and is adopted by the married couple Mink and Tank, his former partners as Choreo. His character arc concludes on a hopeful note as he becomes an eternal friend to Hibiki, finally having his hope restored.

As Choreo, Maito possesses notable abilities in dance combat, powerful enough to incapacitate his opponents and steal their power. His signature style is referred to as a "dance of despair". He also wears a necklace, which is a keepsake from his mother, and this item plays a critical role in his control and eventual liberation. His dance skills are highly praised even by other expert characters.
