TV-Series
Description
Citro is a main character in the Pokémon XY & Z anime and a young inventor who serves as the Lumiose City Gym Leader, specializing in Electric-type Pokémon. He comes from Lumiose City in the Kalos region and lives with his father, Meyer, and his younger sister, Bonnie.

Citro is a boy of slight build with blond hair, blue-gray eyes, and a pair of large round glasses. He wears a blue jumpsuit with yellow stripes, which he often rolls up at the sleeves and legs, and carries a large black-and-white backpack he calls his Citronic Gear. This backpack contains his inventions, including a multi-purpose robotic arm.

As a person, Citro is passionate about science and technology, often declaring that science is the path to the future. He is endlessly enthusiastic about his latest creations, presenting them with great pride. However, his inventions have a notorious habit of malfunctioning and exploding shortly after activation, much to his dismay. Despite these failures, his determination to innovate never wavers.

In terms of personality, Citro is generally calm, polite, and reserved, especially compared to his energetic travel companion Ash. He is thoughtful and analytical, often considering situations logically and developing careful strategies in Pokémon battles. He is not physically athletic and tires easily when running, though he can display surprising bursts of heroic energy when his friends or Pokémon are in danger. Citro is also a skilled cook, preparing meals for the traveling group, and he demonstrates a keen understanding of how cooking and inventing share similar principles of combining ingredients or components effectively.

Citro is defined by his deep care for his younger sister Bonnie. As her older brother, he is highly protective of her, scolding her when she misbehaves and ensuring her safety in dangerous situations. Bonnie frequently embarrasses him by asking older female strangers if they would marry her brother, leading Citro to hastily drag her away while blushing and flustered. He also becomes uncomfortable being photographed or filmed, trembling noticeably when put on camera.

Citro joins Ash on his journey through Kalos after a complicated series of events involving his Gym Leader duties. Prior to meeting Ash, Citro had created a robotic substitute named Clembot to run the Lumiose City Gym so he could dedicate more time to inventing. However, a malfunction caused Clembot to become overly strict and violent, ejecting challengers who did not possess at least four Gym Badges. When Citro attempted to deactivate the robot using its owner identification mode, he found that the password had never been properly recorded, and Clembot expelled him from his own Gym. After witnessing Ash's dedication to his Pokémon during a crisis, Citro was inspired to challenge Clembot for control of the Gym. He succeeded in defeating his own robot using his Bunnelby, then reprogrammed Clembot to operate the Gym fairly. With his father Meyer's blessing, Citro decided to leave the Gym in Clembot's care and travel with Ash to become stronger and learn more about Pokémon.

Throughout the series, Citro develops from a somewhat insecure inventor who doubts his own abilities into a confident young man and a capable Trainer. Traveling with Ash, Serena, and Bonnie helps him discover his own strengths, including his strategic mind in battles and his capacity for courage. He learns to trust his Pokémon and his own judgment. His departure from the main group to resume his Gym Leader duties is a significant moment of maturity, as he returns to face Ash in an official Gym battle, fulfilling his promise to his father and proving how much he has grown.

Citro has several key relationships that shape his journey. His bond with Ash Ketchum is central to his development. Citro admires Ash's courage, his deep bond with Pikachu, and his unwavering determination to help Pokémon in need. Ash's fighting spirit inspires Citro to become braver and more confident, and the two share a friendly rivalry as Trainers. His relationship with his sister Bonnie is one of protective love and occasional exasperation, but it is clear he would do anything for her. He is also respectful and cooperative with Serena, though he becomes shy and awkward when Bonnie attempts to pair them together.

Citro possesses several notable abilities. As a Gym Leader specializing in Electric-type Pokémon, he is a skilled and strategic Trainer. He has an analytical battle style, often identifying his opponent's weaknesses and adapting his approach mid-fight. His passion for invention produces a wide array of gadgets, from airbag systems in his backpack to devices capable of calming rampaging Pokémon, the Citronic Gear robotic arm, and a phonograph designed to attract Flying-type Pokémon. Though many of these inventions are unstable and prone to exploding, some prove genuinely useful in critical moments. He also shows proficiency in mechanical engineering and programming, having built and later repaired Clembot.

In terms of his Pokémon team, Citro's primary partners include Bunnelby, which he caught shortly before meeting Ash and which later evolves into Diggersby. He also captures a mischievous Chespin from Professor Sycamore's laboratory that becomes deeply attached to him. At Bonnie's request, he catches a Dedenne that she then cares for, though it remains officially his Pokémon. He also reunites with and captures a Luxio that was a childhood friend, which evolves into Luxray. His Gym Pokémon, left behind in Lumiose City, include Magnemite, Magneton, and Heliolisk. Citro is known to have used a Sun Stone to evolve his own Helioptile into Heliolisk.
