Description
Lan Hikari is the human protagonist of the MegaMan NT Warrior anime series. He is an eleven-year-old fifth grader at ACDC Elementary School living in DenTech City. He is the son of the world-renowned scientist Yuichiro Hikari and his wife Haruka, and his grandfather Tadashi originally developed the concept of NetNavis. In the anime, Lan receives MegaMan.EXE as a custom NetNavi from his father as a gift for entering the fifth grade, replacing his standard NormalNavi. Unlike the video game counterpart, in the anime MegaMan is not Lan's twin brother reborn but simply a specially created Navi.
In terms of personality, Lan is outgoing, headstrong, and driven by a strong sense of justice. He has a tendency to oversleep, dislikes homework, and is a poor student, much to the frustration of his teacher. He is often overconfident, sometimes letting his victories get to his head and clouding his judgment. He has a short temper and can be easily annoyed when frustrated. Despite these flaws, he is caring, brave, and loyal to his friends and even to his enemies. He has a large appetite, loves curry especially, enjoys sports like soccer and inline skating, and is frequently seen using his detachable rollerblades. He loves adventure and netbattling, and he places great value on doing the right thing.
Lan's primary motivation is to become a famous NetBattler, though he also wants to protect his friends and the world from cyber-terrorism. He is quick to jump into action when danger arises, even at personal risk. As the operator of MegaMan.EXE, he serves as the main protagonist of the series, sharing the role equally with his NetNavi. Together with his friends, he battles against various criminal organizations, initially the World Three, and later groups such as Grave and Nebula. Over the course of the series, he evolves from a reckless amateur into a skilled and legendary NetBattler. In later seasons, he is recruited as a Net Savior and gains the ability to use Cross Fusion, a technique developed by his father that allows him to merge physically with MegaMan within a Dimensional Area to fight rogue Navis in the real world.
Key relationships include his profound bond with MegaMan, whom he treats as a brother rather than a tool. MegaMan often acts as the voice of reason, nagging Lan to complete his homework or to think before acting. Lan is close friends with his childhood neighbor Maylu Sakurai, who harbors romantic feelings for him, though he is usually oblivious. He maintains a friendly rivalry with the Official NetBattler Chaud Blaze, which eventually develops into deep mutual respect. He is also friends with classmates Dex Ogreon, Yai Ayano, and Tory Froid. He forms additional friendships with NetBattlers such as Raika and Princess Pride throughout his journeys. Lan often clashes with Chaud early on because of their different philosophies regarding the relationship between operators and Navis, with Lan favoring friendship and trust over pure professionalism.
Over the course of the series, Lan matures significantly. He becomes less impulsive and overconfident, learning to work alongside his comrades, take advice from others, and face challenges with a level head. His journey focuses on growing his sense of responsibility while keeping his optimistic and energetic spirit. Notable abilities include his natural instinct for tactical combat and virus busting, his skill in using Battle Chips and executing Program Advances, and his ability to concentrate intensely during NetBattles in a way he cannot in other situations. In the anime, his most distinctive ability is Cross Fusion, which allows him to merge with MegaMan to fight physically. He also possesses keen instincts in combat and a talent for making unexpected comebacks when opponents underestimate him.
