Description
Maylu Sakurai, known in Japan as Meiru Sakurai, is the main female protagonist of the MegaMan NT Warrior anime series and the operator of the NetNavi Roll.EXE. She is the childhood friend and next-door neighbor of Lan Hikari, and the two have been close since early childhood. Maylu is a bright and diligent student who takes her schoolwork seriously and also enjoys playing the piano in her free time. She is generally kind, soft-spoken, and feminine, but she possesses a short and explosive temper that is most often triggered by Lan’s reckless or thoughtless antics. Despite this, she cares deeply for Lan and frequently worries about his safety, often wishing she could be the one to protect him for a change rather than always being rescued. Throughout the series, Maylu harbors strong romantic feelings for Lan, though she does not fully acknowledge them at first. These feelings become more apparent when other female characters, such as Princess Pride and Jasmine, show affection toward Lan, causing Maylu to become visibly jealous and more competitive for his attention. Her favorite color is pink, a preference reflected in her clothing and the design of her Navi.
In the story, Maylu serves as one of Lan’s most steadfast allies. She is the only one of his core group of friends to remain a main character throughout the first season and into the subsequent series Axess, Stream, and Beast, appearing in a majority of episodes. During the first half of NT Warrior, she helps Lan and their classmate Dex Ogreon combat the criminal organization World Three. She participates in the N1 Grand Prix, where her NetNavi Roll is temporarily corrupted by a virus disguised as a Battle Chip, but she and Lan manage to free Roll with help from Mr. Higsby. Maylu is eliminated from the tournament when Roll runs out of energy, but she later cheers Lan on during the finals even as the stadium begins to sink. She also plays a key role in reviving MegaMan after he is deleted by PharaohMan.EXE, and she is given the dog‑shaped program Rush by Dr. Hikari to aid in future missions.
Key relationships include her bond with Lan, which evolves from simple friendship to mutual romantic recognition by the series’ end. Her NetNavi Roll mirrors her own personality and shares a close, protective relationship with MegaMan. Maylu’s dynamic with other friends such as Dex, Yai, and Tory shifts as the series progresses, but she remains a constant presence in Lan’s life. Later in the series, Maylu gains the ability to cross fuse with Roll, a process that merges their consciousness and grants her enhanced combat abilities. This ability also brings out a more fearless and assertive side of her personality. For example, she shows cunning when she tricks Rush into assuming his Synchro Chip form, and she demonstrates newfound courage by exploring dangerous ruins on her own. At the conclusion of the series, after Lan defeats the final antagonist, Maylu runs to him and the two embrace, blushing, implying that their feelings for each other are now openly acknowledged. Overall, Maylu is a reliable, intelligent, and emotionally driven character whose growth is marked by her increasing independence and her deepening relationship with Lan.
