Description
Hikari Netto is the human protagonist of the anime MegaMan NT Warrior. He is an elementary school student, initially eleven years old and in the fifth grade at Akihara Town Elementary School. Netto is a cheerful and outgoing boy who finds it easy to make friends, but he is also notably lazy when it comes to his schoolwork. His academic performance is poor in most subjects except for one: he consistently receives the highest marks in virus busting, a practical application of his exceptional talent for network combat. A habitual late sleeper, Netto often struggles to wake up in the morning, leading to frequent tardiness, much to the chagrin of his teacher and his partner. He is an energetic and active child whose interests include inline skating, which he does everywhere he goes, and playing soccer.
Netto’s primary motivation is his passion for net battling. He dreams of becoming a famous net battler and takes great pride in his skills, which see him and his partner pitted against a series of global criminal organizations. Despite his childlike and sometimes reckless nature, Netto possesses a strong sense of justice and is always prompt to do the right thing, whether it involves saving the world or helping a friend in need. He can be impulsive, and his ego sometimes leads him to make careless mistakes, but his courage and determination allow him to bounce back from difficult situations.
In the story, Netto’s primary role is as the operator and best friend of the net navi MegaMan.EXE. The two form an inseparable team, with Netto commanding MegaMan in battles against viruses and criminals in the cyber world while he remains in the real world. Although he is a civilian, his consistent success against major threats leads him to work alongside official organizations like the Net Police, taking on the role of a net savior to stop cyber-terrorism. From the beginning of the series, he and MegaMan face off against the terrorist group World Three (WWW) and later clash with other powerful syndicates such as Gospel and Nebula.
Netto’s most significant relationship is with his net navi, MegaMan.EXE. Their bond is unique, as MegaMan was created by Netto’s father, Dr. Yuichiro Hikari, a renowned scientist. In the anime, MegaMan is not a sibling but a custom-made navi who often acts as a responsible older brother, nagging Netto to do his homework and waking him up in the morning. Netto lives next door to his childhood friend and classmate, Maylu Sakurai. Although he is dense about romance and often oblivious to her feelings, he cares deeply for her and is easily jealous when she pays attention to other boys. He also shares a friendly rivalry with his classmate Dex and a more intense professional rivalry with the elite official net battler, Eugene Chaud, whose skill he both admires and seeks to surpass.
Over the course of the series, Netto demonstrates development as both a person and a net battler. He is shown to mature, growing from a boy who is merely talented into a more responsible young hero who understands the weight of his actions. His teamwork with MegaMan evolves to a higher level, allowing them to perform special techniques like Full Synchro, wherein their thoughts and emotions become perfectly aligned to increase their power. While his core personality remains optimistic and headstrong, his experiences fighting serious threats temper his youthful arrogance with a better understanding of the evil in the world.
As a net operator, Netto’s notable ability is his capacity to concentrate and strategize exceptionally well during a battle, a focus he cannot achieve in other areas of his life, like the classroom. He is quick to react in a crisis and possesses a sharp, if sometimes simplistic, sense of deduction that helps him get to the heart of a problem. His signature method for launching MegaMan into the net is called a “jack-in,” performed using his PET (Personal Terminal) device. His connection with MegaMan is so powerful that it allows him to harness the technology of Cross Fusion, a process that physically merges Netto with MegaMan’s data, allowing him to fight alongside his navi in the real world.
