TV-Series
Description
Kyōsuke Kōsaka is the main protagonist of the series, a teenage high school student who initially views himself as thoroughly average in nearly every respect. He describes his grades, his family situation, and his appearance as unremarkable, and he values a quiet, peaceful life above all else. At the start of the story, his relationship with his younger sister, Kirino, is extremely distant, having settled into a kind of cold war that has lasted for several years. Kyōsuke has adapted by treating her more like a stranger than a sibling, resigned to the idea that their relationship will never improve. The turning point comes when he accidentally discovers that Kirino is a secret otaku with a large collection of adult games and anime, a revelation that forces him to reevaluate everything he thought he knew about her.

Kyōsuke's core motivation is his strong sense of responsibility as an older brother. Once he learns Kirino's secret, he becomes determined to support her, even when her interests and hobbies are uncomfortable or alien to him. He agrees to her request for life counseling, which involves playing the very games she loves, and in doing so, he gradually becomes more familiar with otaku culture, adopting its terminology and perspectives into his own thinking. This drive to help extends far beyond his sister. He is a deeply loyal and good-hearted person who is willing to take significant personal risks and endure humiliation for the sake of his friends and family. He often puts himself in difficult situations to protect others, whether by confronting authority figures, taking blame for problems he did not cause, or joining clubs he has no interest in simply to ensure a friend does not feel isolated.

His role in the story is that of a catalyst and a mediator. As the primary point of view character, he is drawn into the complex social world that surrounds Kirino's secret life, acting as a bridge between his sister, her otaku friends, and the ordinary world he prefers. He frequently finds himself solving the emotional and social problems of the people around him, using his patience and his willingness to listen to understand what others are feeling and what they truly need.

Kyōsuke's key relationships drive the narrative forward. His bond with Kirino is the emotional center of the series, evolving from mutual coldness into a deep, protective closeness that eventually grows into romantic feelings, culminating in a confession and a brief secret marriage before they agree to return to being siblings. His relationship with Ruri Gokō, known as Kuroneko, begins with mutual teasing and shared otaku interests, developing into a romantic relationship that ends when Kuroneko breaks up with him to help him confront his true feelings for his sister. His childhood friend Manami Tamura represents stability and normality, though her hidden romantic feelings create tension, particularly when she proposes a fake relationship to test his loyalty. With Ayase Aragaki, Kirino's friend, Kyōsuke starts as a target of her contempt but gradually earns her genuine trust and affection through his honest and selfless actions. He also forms a steady friendship with Saori Makishima, the leader of Kirino's otaku circle, who serves as a calm and perceptive ally.

Throughout the series, Kyōsuke undergoes significant development. He begins as a passive, unmotivated teenager who wishes only to avoid trouble, but he transforms into someone who actively takes on immense emotional burdens and makes difficult, often painful choices for the sake of others. He learns to express his feelings more openly, to confront his own desires, and to accept the consequences of his decisions, even when they lead to heartbreak or social disapproval. His notable abilities are not supernatural or physical but lie in his emotional intelligence, his stubborn perseverance, and his talent for listening. He has a remarkable capacity to understand what people are going through and to offer them the support they need, often at great personal cost to himself. His greatest strength is his unyielding will to protect the people he cares about, no matter how messy or painful the situation becomes.
