Description
Kirino Kōsaka is the younger sister of the protagonist Kyōsuke and serves as the central figure of the story. At first glance, she appears to be the perfect adolescent: she maintains excellent grades, displays competent athletic ability, and has achieved popularity among her peers, so much so that she works as a professional fashion model. However, this flawless exterior conceals a secret double life. Kirino is a devoted otaku with a specific and intense passion for little sister-themed eroge, or erotic games, as well as the magical girl anime Stardust Witch Meruru.

Her personality is a complex and often contradictory blend of traits. In her public life, she is mature, independent, and capable, but at home with her brother, she reveals a far less pleasant side. She is a classic tsundere, frequently displaying a hostile, abusive, and ungrateful attitude toward Kyōsuke. She barks orders at him, forces him to play her games, and then accuses him of being a pervert for doing so. Despite her aggressive and demanding nature, which can make her seem immensely unlikable and selfish, this behavior is largely a facade. It masks a deep-seated affection and a genuine, if hidden, reliance on her brother. Her catchphrases, often directed at Kyōsuke, include calling him gross or telling him he is the worst. Her fierce temperament and hair-trigger anger are defining characteristics, yet these are contrasted by moments where her underlying kindness and vulnerability show through.

Kirino's primary motivation throughout the story is the reconciliation of her public image with her secret otaku identity, and the restoration of her strained relationship with her older brother. She had once idolized Kyōsuke when they were younger, but a sense of disappointment led to a prolonged period of distance between them. The discovery of her eroge collection by Kyōsuke acts as the catalyst for their renewed interaction. She uses his support as a confidant to gradually open up about her hobby, seeking out friends who share her interests, such as Ruri Gokou, known as Kuroneko, and Saori Makishima.

In the story, Kirino plays the dual role of the instigator and the emotional core. Her secret and her demands force Kyōsuke out of his lethargic life and into the world of otaku culture. Her role deepens as she begins writing novels herself, having a story of hers adapted into an anime, which demonstrates her ambition and drive. A crucial aspect of her character is her intense possessiveness over Kyōsuke. She becomes visibly frustrated and jealous whenever he shows interest in other girls, even going so far as to sabotage his interactions with them, though she vehemently denies having a brother complex.

Key relationships define her development. Her bond with Kyōsuke is the most significant, evolving from cold distance to a co-dependent, deeply affectionate, and ultimately romantic relationship. The two eventually fall in love, hold a pseudo-wedding, and agree to be a temporary couple before deciding to return to being normal siblings, marking a profound and controversial climax to their arc. Her friendship with the gothic lolita Kuroneko is another important dynamic; while they constantly argue and clash, they share a deep mutual understanding as otaku and become close friends.

Kirino undergoes notable development. She starts as a deeply insecure girl who hides a core part of herself out of shame. With Kyōsuke's help, she gains the confidence to not only share her hobby but to be proud of it. While she remains tsundere, her personality becomes somewhat more toned down and she shows greater capacity for emotional sacrifice, such as suppressing her jealousy to allow Kuroneko to date Kyōsuke. Her journey is about reconciling her conflicting identities and coming to terms with her genuine feelings for her brother.

Beyond her academic and athletic prowess, Kirino has several notable abilities. She is a successful novelist, using the pen name Kiririn, and her work ethic is immense; her athletic success is noted to come from relentless training rather than innate talent, proving she is a hard worker who refuses to coast on her natural gifts. Her otaku knowledge is also encyclopedic, particularly concerning her niche interests in sisterly heroines.
