Description
Dorothy West is a main character in the PriPara anime, a student at Paprika Private Academy, and a professional idol within the PriPara world. She is of mixed heritage, with a Canadian father and a Japanese mother, and is the older twin sister of Leona West. Dorothy is a Pop-type idol whose preferred brand is Fortune Party, a brand she shares with her brother.
In terms of personality, Dorothy is bright, cheerful, and carries herself with a great deal of pride and self-confidence. She can appear bossy and has a sharp tongue, often speaking her mind without hesitation, which sometimes leads to her being a source of conflict. She has a mischievous side and can be flirty, attempting to use her charm to get her way. Despite these traits, Dorothy is not malicious. Underneath her brash exterior, she genuinely cares for her friends and values her bonds with them deeply. She can also be serious when the situation demands it, especially when protecting her loved ones or pursuing her goals as an idol. Her signature catchphrase is Tension max!. A notable quirk is her aversion to horror and supernatural themes, which easily scares her, contrasting with her usual bold demeanor.
Dorothy's primary motivation is to succeed as an idol, initially driven by a sense of rivalry. After being rejected from joining the unit SoLaMi Smile, she holds a grudge and seeks revenge against them. This desire for payback leads her to form her own unit, Dressing Pafé, alongside her brother Leona and Shion Todo, with the manager Usagi. Over time, her motivations evolve from pure rivalry to a genuine ambition to perform, grow, and achieve recognition within PriPara, including competing in the Dream Idol Grand Prix for the legendary Paradise Coord.
Dorothy's role in the story is central as a rival-turned-ally to the main protagonist, Laala Manaka. She is a core member of the unit Dressing Pafé, which later merges with its rival SoLaMi Smile to form the supergroup SoLaMi Dressing. She also becomes a member of the PriPara Police, a team dedicated to upholding order in the idol world. Throughout the series, she participates in various major competitions, including multiple Dream Idol Grand Prix events.
Her key relationships are primarily with her twin brother, Leona West. Dorothy is extremely protective of Leona and thinks very highly of him, often relying on him as her anchor. Their close bond is a defining aspect of her character. She also has a significant relationship with her teammate, Shion Todo. The two are very different and often clash due to their stubborn personalities, but they develop a strong friendship and perform well together as a unit. Initially holding a strong rivalry with Mirei Minami of SoLaMi Smile for turning her down, Dorothy eventually puts these feelings aside as she forms friendships with the entire group.
Dorothy shows notable development throughout the series. Her initial immaturity, bossiness, and vengeful attitude begin to dissipate as she grows closer to Laala and her friends. She learns to value teamwork and camaraderie over her selfish desires, becoming a more grounded and reliable friend who is willing to put herself on the line for others. This evolution transforms her from a petty troublemaker into a respected and loyal teammate.
Regarding abilities, beyond her idol performances which feature her brand Fortune Party, Dorothy has several unique skills. She sometimes mixes English with Japanese in her speech, reflecting her Canadian heritage. She has a few unusual techniques, including a Max Beam, a mysterious ray of energy she emits from her face, and ninja-like skills in infiltration and stealth, which she likely learned from her father. Her charm and confidence level are high, though her ability to actually mesmerize others is inconsistent. Despite her strengths, she has accumulated over one thousand warning tickets for rule-breaking, highlighting her rebellious streak. She also uses the masculine pronoun boku to refer to herself.
