Description
Iris Midgar is the first princess of the Midgar Kingdom and serves as the leader of the Crimson Order, the kingdom’s elite knighthood. As the older sister of Princess Alexia Midgar, she is a young woman in her early twenties who has been recognized as a prodigy since childhood. From a very young age, Iris demonstrated extraordinary talent with the sword, famously defeating her instructors on her first attempt. She was the top student at the Royal Spellsword Academy before graduating, and later rose to prominence by winning the Bushin Festival, where she gained widespread fame and popularity among the citizenry for her strength.
In terms of personality, Iris is defined by her courage, diligence, and a serious commitment to her duties as a protector of the realm. She is widely admired as an exemplary warrior and a symbol of Midgar's strength and pride. However, beneath this stern and disciplined public persona, she possesses a surprisingly naive and candid side. Privately, she enjoys simple comforts like stuffed animals, and she has little experience with romantic or sentimental matters, creating a marked contrast between her public image and her true nature. Her bravery can also border on recklessness, as she has a tendency to charge headfirst into danger without fully considering the consequences.
One of Iris’s most defining traits is her fierce protectiveness over her younger sister, Alexia. She is deeply devoted to Alexia and is willing to act harshly toward anyone she suspects of causing her harm. This devotion, however, sometimes coexists with tension, as the sisters are often compared to one another. Iris herself has acknowledged that Alexia possesses superior intellectual and political skills, which has led Iris to focus almost exclusively on honing her own combat abilities to meet the expectations placed upon her. Her relationship with her father, King Klaus Midgar, is more strained, as she prefers direct, forceful solutions to problems while he prioritizes maintaining peace and often reprimands her for not thinking through the consequences of her actions.
Throughout the story, Iris’s primary motivation is the safety and security of her kingdom and her sister. This drive initially leads her to view the clandinate organization Shadow Garden as a direct threat and an enemy to be vanquished. Her role becomes increasingly central as she personally leads the investigation into threats against the royal family and confronts the growing chaos in the capital. During the terrorist attack on the Midgar Academy, she witnessed the power of Shadow Garden firsthand, an event that solidified her resolve to oppose them. Despite witnessing overwhelming displays of power, including a massive explosion that leveled several city blocks, Iris stubbornly refused to accept that such strength could be natural, instead believing her opponent must be using a powerful magical artifact as a crutch.
Iris undergoes a significant transformation following her humiliating defeat during the Bushin Festival. After being effortlessly bested by Shadow, who was disguised as the unassuming participant "Mundane Mann," her pride was shattered. She later joined forces with the legendary elven warrior Beatrix, the "Goddess of War," in an attempt to defeat Shadow as he revealed his true identity, but they were both defeated with brutal ease. This public and catastrophic failure had a profound effect on her psyche. Her initial hostility turned into an obsession; she became fixated on growing stronger to defeat Shadow, driven by a desperate need to restore her own honor and the kingdom's reputation. This obsession ultimately made her vulnerable to manipulation by agents of the Cult of Diablos, who fed her false information and convinced her that the Cult was merely a fabrication of Shadow Garden, causing a rift between her and Alexia, who had gathered evidence to the contrary.
As a combatant, Iris is widely recognized as the strongest swordswoman in the Midgar Kingdom. She possesses an exceptionally high quantity and quality of magic, a natural trait of the Midgar royal lineage. She can use this magic aggressively in combat to enhance her physical resilience, withstand heavy damage, and even heal her wounds over time. Her swordsmanship has been praised since she was a child, and she wields her blade with immense power. However, despite her formidable abilities, the story makes it clear that her strength relies more on raw magical power than on refined technique. Consequently, she is completely outclassed by the members of Shadow Garden, particularly their leader, Shadow, who considers her reliance on a powerful artifact sword a sign of weakness. Her defeat forces her to confront the limits of her power, leading her to a period of depression and self-reflection as she grapples with her inadequacy and the weight of her responsibilities.
