Description
Hiyori Iki is a human girl whose life becomes inextricably linked with the divine after a selfless act. Initially introduced as a middle school student who later enters high school, Hiyori comes from a family that runs a private hospital, providing her with a stable and fairly affluent upbringing. She has a clean and refined appearance, with shoulder-length dark hair and pink eyes, but this ladylike exterior conceals a surprising passion for martial arts and wrestling, being a devoted fan of a fighter named Touno.

Personality-wise, Hiyori is defined by her pure-hearted and brave nature, combined with an incredibly strong sense of justice. She has a tendency to rush into danger to protect others, even complete strangers, without any regard for her own safety. This core trait is what leads to her predicament, as she pushes Yato out of the way of an oncoming bus, putting herself in harm's path. Following this accident, she becomes a Half-Phantom, a state where her soul frequently and involuntarily separates from her physical body, leaving her real body unconscious wherever it falls. In this ethereal form, a cord known as her "tail" connects her soul to her body, and if this cord were to be severed, she would die.

Despite her brave and caring disposition, Hiyori can be somewhat air-headed and is easily flustered, particularly by romantic matters. She is also remarkably perceptive, often able to see the good intentions behind harsh words or to understand the deeper feelings of those around her, such as when she deduces Yato's reluctance to help certain people stems from his care for his own Regalia, who are spirits of the dead who desperately wanted to live. She has a noted fixation on Yato's personal scent, finding it comforting, which becomes a key factor in her ability to remember him even when her memories are threatened.

Hiyori's primary motivation throughout the story is to return to her normal, fully human life, and she initially strikes a deal with Yato, the stray god, to help her achieve this. However, as she becomes more involved with him and his Shinki, Yukine, her motivations evolve. She becomes deeply devoted to them, viewing them as an extension of her family and feeling a profound sense of responsibility for their well-being. Even when presented with a clear opportunity to sever her spiritual ties and become human again, she refuses because it would mean forgetting Yato and everything they have experienced together. Her role in the story is that of a crucial emotional anchor for both Yato, who is a god without followers and prone to loneliness, and for Yukine, a troubled young spirit. She provides them with a connection to humanity and a sense of home, even going so far as to build Yato a miniature shrine, a gesture that fulfills his deepest wish.

In terms of relationships, her bond with Yato is the cornerstone of the series. Initially business-like, it grows into a deep, mutual trust and affection, with Hiyori often acting as the more mature and level-headed one in their partnership. She encourages his dreams and supports him unconditionally, and her feelings eventually evolve into romantic love. With Yukine, she forms a strong sisterly bond, becoming a trusted confidante and tutor when he expresses a wish to study, even offering him a place to stay and standing up for him during his darkest moments.

Throughout her development, Hiyori becomes more than just a girl with a curse. She gains a greater understanding of the world of gods and spirits, learning to control her astral projection to some degree. Her natural physical prowess, combined with her martial arts knowledge, makes her a capable fighter in her Half-Phantom form, using powerful kicks and savate techniques to fend off phantoms and protect her friends.

Regarding her notable abilities, Hiyori's primary power is astral projection, which allows her to leave her physical body and exist as a soul. In this Half-Phantom state, she gains enhanced physical attributes such as superhuman strength, speed, and agility, enabling her to scale buildings and hold her own in combat. She also develops a supernatural sense of smell, or clairalience, which allows her to detect the unique scents of gods and Shinki from great distances. Furthermore, her condition grants her the ability to normally see and hear the various spirits and creatures from the "Far Shore" that are usually invisible to ordinary humans.
