Description
Medusa is a gorgon demon summoned from Hell by Jashin-chan to petrify the human summoner Yurine, enabling Jashin-chan's return. This plan failed when Yurine, forewarned of Medusa's identity by Jashin-chan, used an anti-petrification bracelet. Unable to return to Hell, Medusa now resides near Yurine's apartment among other supernatural beings.
She possesses pale skin, short light purple hair with a cowlick, and matching purple eyes. Initially depicted in simple Roman-style dresses, her attire shifted to an Egyptian motif following a "leveling up" event. To prevent accidental petrification of humans, she consistently wears a paper bag over her head outdoors; this bag does not impede her vision.
Medusa exhibits a polite, kind, and nurturing personality, often embodying an ideal wife archetype, particularly in her dynamic with Jashin-chan where she resembles a caring spouse managing an irresponsible partner. Despite Jashin-chan frequently exploiting her for money or manipulating her, Medusa remains deeply loyal. Their bond stems from childhood when Jashin-chan defended her from bullies, though Jashin-chan concealed her protective motives. This history underpins Medusa's unwavering patience, though prolonged mistreatment can trigger rare "Passive-Aggressive Mode," characterized by eerily calm behavior and exaggerated politeness. Extreme emotional stress may induce "Medusa High," a euphoric state causing intense hallucinations in nearby beings, including demons and angels, though Yurine exhibits resistance.
Her primary ability is petrification through direct eye contact, effective only on mortals. Demons, angels, and deities remain unaffected unless she enters "Medusa High." Additional traits include enhanced durability against physical attacks and enhanced vision that allows clear sight through obstructions like the paper bag. Attempts to control her power, such as specialized contact lenses, resulted in self-petrification and were abandoned.
Medusa's closest relationship is with Jashin-chan, whom she openly cherishes through acts like offering lap pillows, embraces, or gifting handmade chocolates on Valentine's Day while emphasizing Jashin-chan's irreplaceable status. She perceives kindness behind Jashin-chan's abrasive exterior. Observers like Yurine frequently compare their interactions to a spousal relationship, with Medusa assuming the "wife" role. She maintains friendships with Minos, another childhood companion, and Yurine, often visiting her apartment. Notably, she works a secret night shift with her two sisters enforcing laws, a detail she inadvertently disclosed only to Jashin-chan.
Character development shows Medusa gradually asserting boundaries, such as allowing Jashin-chan to face consequences after taking credit for Medusa resolving a bank hostage crisis. During this incident, she removed her bag to petrify criminals, then arranged for Jashin-chan's arrest by Officer Mei Tachibana. Despite occasional frustrations, her foundational loyalty persists, reinforced by flashbacks to their shared past and mutual dependence.
