TV-Series
Description
Mei Tachibana is a Japanese police officer at the Banzaibashi Police Department who calls herself a "Super Cop" devoted to keeping peace in Akihabara. She has short black hair and yellow or gold eyes, and typically wears her police uniform.
Her personality is erratic and unstable, marked by sudden mood shifts, indiscriminate violence, and a seeming absence of empathy. She merges her police work with a habit of collecting things or people she finds "cute," frequently stealing objects like grave markers, bus schedule signs, or statues. She openly admits to these actions and relentlessly chases what she desires without seeing her behavior as unusual. Off-duty, she behaves calmly.
She first appears as an officer who becomes instantly infatuated with Jashin-chan, arresting her and dubbing her "Orochimaru." She asks Yurine Hanazono for permission to keep Jashin-chan and is initially allowed, though Yurine later reverses the decision. This leads Mei to attack Jashin-chan with a collapsible sword or firearm, varying by adaptation. She begins regularly pursuing Jashin-chan as both a love interest and collector's item.
Mei repeatedly kidnaps Koji because of her resemblance to a mole, planning to preserve her in formaldehyde. Koji uses ice abilities to break free, but Mei continues her attempts. She also arrests Pekora several times, first on mistaken drug charges and later out of fascination with Pekora's exhausted expression, believing her to be a human child. She tries to steal Ran-ran, a talking stuffed panda, but ignores Ran-ran's human form.
On one occasion, Yurine offers to sell Jashin-chan to Mei, who promptly pays the requested amount to finalize the purchase. Mei also displays drunken behavior after consuming too much beer.
As an officer, she carries a handgun and handcuffs. In her collecting pursuits, she shows great physical strength, placing her among the strongest characters such as Minos and Yurine. She uses a switchblade aggressively for tasks like opening packages.
Mei gives new names to everyone and everything she collects, even if she knows their real names. In the manga, she fires her service weapon at Jashin-chan, though the anime replaces this with a telescopic sword. Similarly, her theft of a bus stop sign becomes an online purchase in the anime.
