TV-Series
Description
Gre-chan is the youngest member of the Robot Girls Team Z and is based on the super robot Great Mazinger. She is a character who stands out for her calm, cynical, and almost emotionless demeanor, which contrasts sharply with the hot-blooded personalities often associated with the mecha genre she parodies.
In terms of appearance, Gre-chan is notably shorter than her teammates, standing at least a head shorter than the team leader, Z-chan. She has long, slightly messy purple hair styled after Jun Hono from the original Great Mazinger series, and her face typically carries a blank, unreadable expression. Her battle suit is a direct homage to Great Mazinger, consisting of a black jacket with blue cuffs, a red necktie, a V-shaped emblem on the chest that mirrors Great Mazinger's heat sink, a red skirt, black stockings, and blue boots.
Her personality is defined by her minimal speech and sharp, cynical outlook. She frequently judges her teammates and opponents for their flaws, often calling the athletic and impulsive Z-chan a kid, even though Z-chan is slightly older. Gre-chan openly states that she dislikes athletic girls, specifically targeting Z-chan, and she tends to be lazy, preferring to avoid fights or athletic events whenever possible. Instead, she would rather sit around, play video games, eat sweets, and observe the world through a digital camera or her portable gaming system, items she is often seen holding. Despite her harsh treatment of Z-chan, she does harbor genuine care for her, having expressed concern over Z-chan's safety and even crying when Z-chan said she hated her.
Her primary motivation is not driven by a grand sense of justice but rather by her duties and personal inclinations. She works two known jobs: as a promoter for the Photon Power Laboratory and as a sales clerk at her parents' video game store. Her role in the story is as a core member of Team Z, where she and her teammates are tasked with protecting Photonic City from various threats. While she participates in battles, she often does so with an air of reluctant efficiency, pointing out the mistakes of her enemies and allies alike.
Regarding her key relationships, her dynamic with Z-chan is the most prominent. While she constantly insults Z-chan and calls her a kid, this seems to be a facade for a deeper, if grudging, affection. She is also a colleague of her other teammate, Grenda-san, with whom she forms the main trio of Robot Girls Team Z.
In terms of development, Gre-chan appears in different continuities within the franchise. In the original Robot Girls Z, she is a cynical but capable fighter. In the sequel continuity Robot Girls NEO, set after a photon energy disaster, she lives with Z-chan in a makeshift home called Photon House at the base of a surviving research tower. In this setting, she continues to survive alongside Z-chan in a ruined city, with her role shifting from team defender to a partner in daily survival. She also has a younger form known as Gre-tan, depicted as an elementary schooler with shorter hair, large glasses, and overalls, holding an older gaming system.
Gre-chan possesses several notable abilities derived from her Great Mazinger origins. Through a device called the Brain Conder, she can manifest her battle suit and use attacks such as launching her fists for an Atomic Punch, summoning the Mazinger Blade to cut through beam attacks, controlling electricity for the Thunder Break, and generating gale-force winds with the Great Typhoon. She can summon the Great Booster for flight, though she is prone to motion sickness on boats. An enhanced form, G Booster Gre-chan, was introduced in the Robot Girls Z ONLINE game, where the Great Booster attaches to her back to enhance her abilities, enabling high-speed flight and powerful attacks like the Booster Sword.
