Description
Poses O2, sometimes written as Poses ΟII, is a mechanical beast girl who appears in the anime Robot Girls Z as a supporting antagonist in the third episode. She is the humanized version of a seahorse-shaped mechanical beast of the same name, and her design follows that aquatic theme. She is a teenage girl with blonde or yellow hair cut to shoulder length, and she wears a magenta seahorse-like suit with a red fin running down the back of her head, a pink belly framed by a red outline, spikes along the back of her tail, and red pincer-like claws. The original mechanical beast on which she is based was designed by Makoto Murasai.
Her personality is described as natural and spacey. One of her most recognizable traits is her habit of ending her sentences with the suffix "kuron," a verbal tic that plays on the Omicron reading of the letter O in her name. In spite of her airy outward manner, she is actually a sensible and level-headed person. The result is that, because of her strange costume and unusual behavior, she has never once been dealt with seriously by those around her. This contrast between her odd presentation and her underlying common sense is the defining feature of her characterization.
Her behavior in the story reflects her seahorse inspiration. Poses O2 can pull her face and limbs entirely inside her suit, and in that state she drifts through the open ocean, occasionally floating even down to the deep sea, waiting to be caught on a line and pulled into a fight. While she is retracted into her suit, small fish peck at her freely, which reinforces her odd and passive image. Her role in the plot is that of a supporting antagonist: when the conflict of her episode begins, she functions as an opponent of the central heroines, though her unhurried way of entering battle is far less direct than that of other mechanical beast girls. Her passive strategy of waiting to be hooked means she becomes involved in a fight only when someone takes the bait.
In combat, Poses O2 draws on the abilities of the original mechanical beast. Her natural environment is the sea, and she is well suited to fighting in water. She can generate a powerful whirlpool from her mouth and release electric shocks from her tail, and her abdomen is equipped to launch self-destruct missiles as well as smaller units called small Poses. In its original form, the seahorse mechanical beast stood roughly seventeen meters tall and weighed two hundred tons, and its aquatic attack repertoire carries over into the girl character based on it.
Because Poses O2 appears only briefly in the series, she does not undergo meaningful character development. Her characterization rests instead on the steady contrast between her bizarre, passive methods and the sensible personality hidden beneath them. She does not form lasting personal bonds with the main cast; her presence is confined to the brief encounter in which she is drawn out of the sea and into battle.
