Description
Lloyd Asplund is a supporting character in the anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Special Edition Black Rebellion. He is a Britannian aristocrat holding the title of Earl and serves as the head of the Advanced Special Envoy Engineering Corps, later renamed Camelot. A highly gifted scientist and engineer, Lloyd is the principal designer and developer of the seventh-generation Knightmare Frame known as the Lancelot, one of the most advanced war machines in the series. He is in his late twenties at the time of the Black Rebellion, having studied at the Imperial Colchester Institute before joining the military. His research division operates under special permission from Prince Schneizel, allowing it to function outside standard military regulations.

Lloyd’s personality is that of an eccentric genius. He openly describes himself as a sociopath, claiming to lack genuine interest in romantic or emotional attachments. He tends to view human beings as interchangeable parts of a machine rather than as individuals, a perspective he applies especially to the pilot of his Lancelot, Suzaku Kururugi, whom he regards as a component of the weapon. Despite this cold exterior, subtle moments throughout the story reveal that he does care for those closest to him, particularly his assistant Cécile Croomy, though he is uncomfortable discussing personal feelings. His demeanor is often relaxed, playful, and childish, yet he can display sharp insight and panic when faced with extreme circumstances. His primary motivation is a deep, almost obsessive dedication to scientific progress and technological innovation, which he treats as the only pursuit that engages his heart.

Within the Black Rebellion storyline, Lloyd’s role centers on his creation of the Lancelot and his selection of Suzaku as its pilot. He introduces the machine to the Britannian military and supports its deployment in combat against the forces of Zero. After the Black Rebellion, his division is absorbed into the larger Camelot organization, and he becomes Suzaku’s dedicated technical engineer. He later collaborates with Cécile and Nina Einstein to develop countermeasures against the F.L.E.I.A. weapon and constructs a specialized Lancelot variant for C.C. In the broader arc beyond the special edition, he willingly joins Lelouch vi Britannia’s new regime, remarking that he and Cécile have become cogs in a machine without realizing it, and he participates in the Zero Requiem plan.

Key relationships define much of his character. With Cécile Croomy, he shares a close professional partnership that evolves into a subtle bond, with her often acting as a grounding influence. He becomes engaged to Milly Ashford, though the engagement is seemingly motivated by his fascination with the ancient Knightmare Frame Ganymede rather than romantic affection. He works closely with Suzaku, viewing him as a vital part of the Lancelot while also acknowledging his pilot’s importance. He is granted operational independence by Prince Schneizel, tying his scientific work to the political ambitions of the Britannian imperial family. Later, he cooperates with Lelouch and Suzaku in executing the Zero Requiem, showing a willingness to align with a cause beyond pure science.

Lloyd’s notable abilities lie in his exceptional talent for advanced engineering and weapon design. He is responsible for developing the Lancelot, the Hadron Cannon, and various flight systems for Knightmare Frames. His analytical mind allows him to create cutting-edge technology and devise combat strategies, though his emotional detachment sometimes limits his effectiveness as a leader under pressure. Over the course of the story, Lloyd’s character develops a subtle layer of humanity, moving from a purely detached inventor to someone who contributes to a larger, more complex plan, yet his fundamental view of people as replaceable components remains a defining trait.
