Description
Lelouch Lamperouge is the central figure of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 Special Edition Zero Requiem. Born Lelouch vi Britannia, he is the eleventh prince of the Holy Britannian Empire and the son of Emperor Charles zi Britannia and the late Empress Consort Marianne. After the assassination of his mother and the crippling of his younger sister Nunnally in the same attack, a ten-year-old Lelouch confronted his father and was subsequently exiled to Japan along with Nunnally, where they lived as political hostages. Following Britannia’s invasion of Japan, Lelouch hid his royal identity and adopted the alias Lelouch Lamperouge, living as a student at Ashford Academy while harboring a deep resentment toward the empire.

Personality-wise, Lelouch is exceptionally intelligent, calm, and sophisticated, but also arrogant and stoic. He presents a friendly, easygoing front at school, but this is a mask that conceals his true calculating and ruthless nature. As the masked revolutionary Zero, he expresses his genuine charisma, strategic brilliance, and unwavering belief in justice. He is morally ambiguous, often operating in shades of gray as he pursues his goals through manipulation, deception, and willing sacrifice of others. Despite his cold exterior, he possesses a deeply compassionate side, especially toward his sister Nunnally and his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi. His drive for revenge against Britannia slowly evolves into a broader desire to reshape the world into a gentler place for Nunnally and for all humanity.

Lelouch’s primary motivation is to create a peaceful world where his blind and physically disabled sister Nunnally can live happily and safely. This personal quest expands over time into an ambition to dismantle the oppressive Britannian Empire and its systemic inequality. His pursuit of this ideal forces him to confront profound ethical dilemmas, as he often believes the ends justify the means. He is willing to become a tyrant, a villain, and ultimately a martyr to achieve lasting peace.

In the story, Lelouch’s role is that of the protagonist and the architect of the rebellion against Britannia. After receiving the power of Geass from the immortal witch C.C., he gains the ability to issue a single command that any person must obey absolutely. Using this power and his genius-level intellect, he adopts the identity of Zero and forms the Order of the Black Knights, a resistance group that grows from a small terrorist cell into a formidable military and political force. He becomes a master strategist and tactician, outmaneuvering Britannian forces and rival factions through careful planning and psychological warfare. His journey culminates in the Zero Requiem, the plan in which he seizes control of the world as the hated Emperor, then allows himself to be assassinated by Suzaku (disguised as Zero) so that all the world’s hatred is concentrated on him, clearing the way for genuine peace and unity.

Key relationships define Lelouch’s development. His bond with Nunnally is the emotional core of his entire endeavor; he is a loving and protective older brother. His friendship and rivalry with Suzaku Kururugi is central to the narrative: they share a past but choose opposing methods—Suzaku’s path of reform from within versus Lelouch’s path of revolution from without. Their conflict and eventual collaboration in the Zero Requiem highlight the series’ themes of sacrifice and redemption. C.C., the giver of his Geass, becomes his closest confidante and the only person who fully understands his burdens. Other important connections include Kallen Stadtfeld, a loyal Black Knights ace pilot, and the many friends and enemies he manipulates along the way.

Lelouch’s development is marked by a steady accumulation of trauma and moral compromise. Every major victory comes at a great personal cost: the accidental Geass-induced massacre of innocents at the hands of Princess Euphemia, the betrayal and loss of allies, and the slow erosion of his own humanity. By the final act, he has become a self-aware tragic figure who accepts that he cannot escape the consequences of his actions. The Zero Requiem is not a last-minute gamble but the logical conclusion of his journey—a calculated self-sacrifice that transforms him from revolutionary into the ultimate scapegoat for the world’s divisions.

His notable abilities include genius-level intellect, strategic foresight, exceptional skill in deception and psychological manipulation, and a talent for inspiring loyalty and fear. He is also a capable Knightmare Frame pilot, though his true strength lies in commanding the battlefield from the shadows. The Geass itself is both a tool and a curse: it grants absolute obedience but distances him from genuine human connections and carries the risk of going out of control. Lelouch uses his power sparingly and strategically, but its influence shapes the entire course of the rebellion and his own downfall.
