Description
Nunnally Vi Britannia is a central supporting figure in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 Special Edition Zero Requiem. She is the younger biological sister of Lelouch vi Britannia and a former princess of the Holy Britannian Empire, born on October 25 in approximately a.t.b. 2003 to Emperor Charles zi Britannia and his consort Marianne vi Britannia. In the imperial succession she was 87th in line for the throne. Her early childhood was spent in relative happiness at the Imperial Aries Villa with her mother and older brother, and she shared close bonds with several half-siblings, especially Euphemia li Britannia.

When she was about seven years old, her mother was assassinated during an attack that also left Nunnally critically wounded. The injuries resulted in the loss of the use of her legs, and she became blind, a condition that was originally believed to stem from the psychological trauma of the event but was later revealed to have been induced by her father's Geass as a protective measure. Because the Emperor regarded her as weak and useful only for a potential political marriage, she was exiled to Japan along with Lelouch as a political hostage. After Britannia's invasion of Japan, the siblings took the assumed surname Lamperouge and hid at Ashford Academy, where they were sheltered by the Ashford family and cared for by the ninja maid Sayoko Shinozaki.

Nunnally's personality is characterized by gentleness, kindness, empathy, and a quiet optimism that persists despite her disabilities. She endures her blindness and paralysis with composure and warmth, showing genuine concern for those around her, including people she has never seen. She is deeply trusting and dislikes conflict, and she prefers peaceful, reconciliatory solutions over force. Although she appeared outwardly serene, novels and supplementary material note that she privately struggled with her circumstances and threw temper tantrums as a child, which she eventually outgrew. Her perceptiveness is notable: despite her blindness, she can sense when someone is lying simply by holding that person's hand, and she retains the ability to appreciate the world through her other senses, even continuing to enjoy drawing from memory.

Her primary motivation is the wish for a kinder and more peaceful world. This wish, which she planned to make after folding a thousand paper cranes, became the founding inspiration for her brother Lelouch's campaign to change the world. After Euphemia's death, Nunnally carries on her half-sister's will, most visibly by seeking to establish a Special Administrative Zone in Japan where Japanese citizens could live with greater freedom and dignity. She believes that the world can be changed through gentle means rather than through destruction, and this conviction places her in contrast with her brother's increasingly ruthless methods.

Within the Zero Requiem narrative, Nunnally occupies a significant role in the final stage of the story. After she vanishes during the Black Rebellion and her existence is erased from the memories of those around her, she reappears as the new Governor of Area 11. In that capacity she works with Zero, despite his reputation as a traitor, to advance Euphemia's legacy. During the Second Battle of Tokyo she is seemingly caught in the detonation of a powerful weapon, but she later resurfaces alive aboard the floating fortress Damocles, where she is presented by Schneizel as a claimant to the throne and thus becomes a political enemy of her brother, who now rules as Emperor. She insists on being given the launch mechanism of the superweapon so that she can personally atone for Lelouch's sins, yet she is disturbed by the ease with which her actions cause mass destruction. When Lelouch confronts her, she demonstrates considerable resolve by breaking her father's Geass through her own willpower and then confronting her brother directly, even threatening to turn the Damocles into a symbol of hatred to unite the world, a plan that closely mirrors his own. Lelouch ultimately uses his Geass on her to take control of the weapon, telling her that he loves her as he does so, though she initially believes he merely used her as a tool and denounces him.

In the aftermath of her brother's death during the Zero Requiem, Nunnally experiences one of the most emotionally significant moments of her development. As Suzaku, disguised as Zero, kills Lelouch, she takes her dying brother's hand and immediately comprehends the true purpose of his plan and the sacrifice he made with Suzaku's help. This understanding transforms her grief into a commitment to honor his intentions. In the months that follow, she is protected by the new Zero, and she dedicates herself to building a peaceful world rather than one built on conquest or revenge. She later serves as an honorary advisor to the World Humanitarian Organization, continuing to visit regions affected by conflict as a symbol of reconciliation.

Her key relationships define much of her character. Her bond with Lelouch is the emotional center of her story; the two share mutual adoration, and she declares that she loves him more than anyone else, while his desire to protect her and create a world fit for her drives his choices throughout the series. Her friendship with Suzaku Kururugi is likewise important. She is extremely fond of him and trusts him deeply during their childhood, but that relationship begins to unravel when he becomes a Knight of the Round, because she senses that he is not being honest with her. Euphemia is another crucial figure, as Nunnally both admires her and inherits her peaceful mission. Her relationship with her father Charles is distant and complicated, and her eventual ability to break his Geass represents a quiet act of independence. Schneizel's relationship with her is opportunistic, as he supports her claim to the throne primarily to use her against Lelouch.

Nunnally possesses no combat abilities or supernatural powers of her own. Her notable abilities are her emotional intelligence, her acute perceptiveness, and her inspirational presence. She has a talent for understanding the feelings and motives of others, and her unwavering faith in the possibility of a better world gives her a moral authority that influences the people around her, particularly Lelouch and Suzaku. Her political involvement demonstrates a practical side to her idealism, as she engages directly in governance and makes difficult decisions when circumstances demand them. Ultimately, her growth from a sheltered and dependent young girl into a figure who faces her brother as an opponent, accepts the painful truth of his sacrifice, and devotes herself to sustaining peace is the core of her role in the Zero Requiem story.
