Description
Hayato Matatagi is a principal character in Inazuma Eleven GO Galaxy, serving as a forward for the newly formed Shinsei Inazuma Japan team. He is a student from Kaiou Gakuen, where he was a member of the track and field club, which explains his exceptional speed on the soccer field.

Matatagi has a complex and guarded personality that is shaped by a series of painful childhood experiences. His father abandoned the family, and his mother became too ill to work, forcing Matatagi to take on the responsibility of caring for his two younger brothers, Yuuta and Shun. A pivotal incident from his past involved being betrayed by friends regarding a toy race car, which led him to believe that others could not be trusted. Later, when his younger brothers stole food out of hunger, Matatagi took the blame to protect them, an act that resulted in the people around him looking at him with disdain and losing their trust in him. These events forged a deep-seated distrust of other people within him, and he developed a hidden “dark side,” often talking to himself in a mysterious and cynical manner about the futility of relying on others.

Despite his distrustful nature, Matatagi is shown to be extremely hardworking and persevering. He is often seen training rigorously on his own, even when it is not required, driven by a clear and personal motivation. His primary reason for participating in the Football Frontier International Vision 2 tournament is not glory, but to earn enough money to buy a large house where his family can live comfortably. This goal is central to his actions, as he is determined to make his brothers proud.

At the start of the series, Matatagi is polite but emotionally distant from his new teammates on Shinsei Inazuma Japan, who are all novices to soccer. He is initially wary of the three experienced Raimon players, particularly the optimistic captain Tenma Matsukaze, whose trusting nature Matatagi finds difficult to understand. His role in the story involves a gradual, challenging journey towards learning to cooperate with others. In the early matches, he is prone to playing alone, believing he cannot depend on his teammates. However, through Tenma’s persistent encouragement and the shared struggle to win, he begins to let his guard down. A significant turning point occurs during the match against Fire Dragon, where after hearing Tenma’s words, he finally starts to trust the others and makes a crucial pass. He later develops a hissatsu technique called Parkour Attack, a shoot that utilizes his agility and speed, which he uses to score a critical goal in the match against Big Waves.

As the series progresses into the story’s second half, Matatagi’s internal conflict reaches a climax when his hidden “dark side” is fully activated. In stark contrast to his usual polite demeanor, this personality is arrogant, rude, and aggressive, both towards his teammates and opponents. This transformation represents the manifestation of his long-suppressed frustrations and cynicism, forcing the team to confront his true inner turmoil. This period of development is crucial for him to fully reconcile with his past and integrate his two sides. Ultimately, his relationships with the team, especially with Tenma and his fellow newcomer Tetsukado Shin, are key to his growth as both a player and a person who can trust others.
