TV-Series
Description
Kyosuke Tsurugi is a first-year student at Raimon Middle School and serves as the team's ace striker, wearing the number ten jersey. He is a tall, physically imposing player with dark blue spiky hair and sharp orange eyes. His image color in the Galaxy series is purple, and he often carries himself with a cool, measured demeanor.
Tsurugi's past is central to understanding his character. As a child, he and his older brother, Yuichi, shared a deep passion for soccer. One day, while the two were playing, the ball got caught in a tree. Kyosuke climbed up to retrieve it but fell. Yuichi caught him, suffering a severe leg injury that left him unable to walk. This accident filled Kyosuke with immense guilt. Determined to find a way to help his brother walk again, he was recruited by the Fifth Sector, a powerful organization that controls soccer. He agreed to become a Seed, an agent sent to destroy rebellious teams, in exchange for their funding of a costly operation for Yuichi.
Initially, Tsurugi is introduced as a hostile and antagonistic figure. He leads a team called the Black Knights to dismantle Raimon, displaying a ruthless and provocative attitude. His hatred for soccer is a facade born from the trauma of his brother's injury and the belief that he must abandon the sport he loves to fulfill his duty. However, after confronting his brother's true wishes and the unyielding spirit of players like Matsukaze Tenma, he reforms and joins Raimon. Following his redemption, Tsurugi's true personality emerges: he is cool, reserved, and a man of few words, but harbors a kind and deeply caring heart. He is often shy about open displays of camaraderie, prefers to stay on the periphery of overly social situations, and is described as being somewhat of a tsundere character.
His primary motivation throughout the series shifts from his brother's recovery to protecting the true spirit of soccer. For Tsurugi, playing soccer becomes proof of his identity and a way to honor his brother's dream. In the Galaxy arc, he is selected as a member of Inazuma Japan, which later becomes Earth Eleven as they journey into space to compete in the Grand Celesta Galaxy tournament. Here, he takes on a more mature role, acting as a realistic pillar for the new team members who are beginners on the world stage.
Kyosuke's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with his older brother, Yuichi Tsurugi, is the most important factor driving his actions. Yuichi is a wheelchair user who later undergoes rehabilitation, and Kyosuke holds immense respect and guilt for him. He develops a deep friendship and rivalry with Matsukaze Tenma, who is the one who showed him the path to true soccer and becomes a valuable colleague he recognizes more than anyone else. He also respects his captain, Shindou Takuto, referring to him with honorifics and acknowledging his leadership. He forms a supportive friendship with the goalkeeper Shinsuke Nishizono and a fierce but friendly rivalry with Hakuryu, whom he met in God Eden.
Tsurugi is an exceptionally powerful striker known for his formidable kicking ability. He is a target man, adept at breaking through defenses with powerful positioning rather than fancy dribbling. His notable hissatsu techniques include Death Sword and Death Drop. He is one of the first characters to utilize an avatar, summoning the knight Kensei Lancelot, whose special shoot is Lost Angel. He later masters Avatar Armed, becoming the second Raimon member to do so. In the Chrono Stone arc, he achieves Miximax with Okita Souji. In the Galaxy series, his soul is awakened, manifesting as a wolf. Among his combination techniques are Fire Tornado DD with Tenma, Fire Tornado TC with Tenma and Kinako, Bicycle Sword, and The Earth ∞, a powerful shoot used with Tenma and Shindou.
