Description
Sakata Kintoki is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Gintama, created to serve as a direct foil to the protagonist, Sakata Gintoki. His name and appearance are derived from the legendary Japanese folk hero Sakata Kintoki, also known as Kintaro, who is famously depicted as a superhumanly strong child with a golden complexion. In the context of Gintama, Kintoki is introduced in the "Kintama Arc" as a being who usurps Gintoki's identity and role. His physical design mirrors that of Gintoki, featuring a similar face and build, but with distinct differences that signify his opposing nature; he has straight, golden blonde perm-styled hair and purple pupils, and he wears a white version of Gintoki's black and white outfit, effectively creating a color-inverted appearance.

In terms of personality, Kintoki is initially presented as a perfect and upright individual, embodying all of Gintoki's positive traits while possessing none of his flaws, such as his laziness, childishness, or sweet tooth. He is portrayed as a charismatic, kind, and generous leader of the Odd Jobs Shop, who is deeply admired and respected by the people of Kabuki-cho, including Gintoki's own friends and employees, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura. However, this perfection is a facade for a more complex artificial being. His core motivation is to eliminate Sakata Gintoki and become the true protagonist of the story, believing himself to be a superior replacement.

Kintoki's role in the story is central to the "Kintama Arc," which serves as a meta-commentary on the nature of the protagonist and the series itself. He is revealed to be a highly advanced robot, the Super Alloy Complete Body Sakata Gintoki Unit 2, created by the inventor Gengai at the request of Shinpachi and Kagura, who were frustrated with Gintoki's irresponsible behavior. His primary action in the arc is to use his abilities to alter the memories of nearly every character in the series, replacing all recollections of Gintoki's heroic deeds and relationships with memories of Kintoki performing them instead. This act allows him to steal Gintoki's life, friends, and even his surname, becoming Sakata Kintoki, the new protagonist of a would-be series called "Golden Marriage". Two beings are immune to this memory alteration: the robot Tama and the giant pet dog Sadaharu.

Kintoki's key relationships are defined by his interactions with his "template." His existence is entirely dependent on Sakata Gintoki, whom he seeks to replace. This antagonistic relationship forms the core of his arc. He also has a significant connection to Tama, as both are robots created by Gengai, and Tama plays a crucial role in helping Gintoki uncover the truth and fight back against Kintoki's usurpation. His relationship with his creator, Gengai, is complex, as Kintoki's programming ultimately led him to erase his own master's memories to further his goal.

Kintoki undergoes a notable, albeit brief, development. Initially a cold and calculating antagonist determined to erase Gintoki for his own ascension, he is moved by Gintoki's unwavering determination and the bonds he shares with his friends. After a fierce battle with Gintoki, Kintoki relents, choosing to have himself voluntarily recycled and modified, signifying an acceptance of his role as the "second unit". His final significant role in the story occurs in the "Silver Soul Arc," the series' final conflict, where he returns to make a heroic sacrifice. He and Tama power the Gengai Cannon, using their own energy to disable a planet-wide mechanical weapon system, paralyzing all machinery on Earth, including themselves, and turning the tide of the battle. This act of self-sacrifice completes his transformation from a villainous imposter to a genuine hero.

Regarding his abilities, as a robot, Kintoki possesses superhuman strength and durability. His most notable and formidable ability is not combat-based but technological, allowing him to alter the memories of nearly every human around him on a massive scale. This power effectively allows him to rewrite reality by changing people's perceptions of the past. In combat, he wields a favorite wooden sword named Kinkaku-ji, which is a direct counterpart to Gintoki's signature bokutō, Lake Toya.
