Description
Doctor Ver is the primary antagonist of Senki Zesshō Symphogear G. His full name is John Wayne Vercingetorix, an American with white hair, blue eyes, and a preference for silver-rimmed glasses, an olive-green turtleneck, and a white overcoat with violet trimmings.
A former student at Yale University, his involvement with secret societies led to an invitation to join the Federal Institutes of Sacrist (F.I.S.), a sacred relic research institution in the United States. As an expert in biochemistry, Ver demonstrates considerable genius in research involving the bonding of living organisms to sacred relics. He is the primary developer of an advanced form of LiNKER, a drug that forcibly raises a user's sync ratio with a relic, as well as its counteragent, Anti-LiNKER.
His defining trait is an extreme, fanatical obsession with becoming a hero. He holds a deep admiration for the Symphogear users who saved the world and harbors grand personal ambitions. To create a stage for himself as a savior, he plots to cause a world-ending disaster so that he can repopulate humanity himself.
On the surface, Ver often displays a calm and collected demeanor, but he is in reality visibly insane. He is prone to sudden, extreme, and theatrical outbursts of emotion. Despite his cunning and intelligence, he is also quite cowardly, known to run away screaming and tripping over himself when a plan backfires or he is directly confronted with danger. This cowardice stands in stark contrast to his aspirations of heroism and highlights his delusional and self-serving nature.
In the story, he is initially transferred from America to work with the Special Disaster Response Team Section Two, using this position as a cover for his true agenda. He steals the relic known as Solomon's Cane to control the Noise and works to revive and fully mature the powerful relic Nephilim. His actions directly lead to the abduction of Miku Kohinata, forcing her to adapt to a Symphogear and later using her as a puppet to control the ancient mobile fortress Frontier. He ultimately attempts to use Frontier to accelerate the moon's descent to Earth, intending to cull most of humanity.
Key relationships define his role. He works alongside Professor Nastassja and the wielders Maria Cadenzavna Eve, Kirika Akatsuki, and Shirabe Tsukuyomi, but he despises being subservient to Nastassja and feels no loyalty to the group. In his final moments, crushed by debris, he gives Maria a data chip containing his vital research and asks if he has finally become a hero. Maria's reply is that he is "the worst kind" of hero, granting him a tragic and twisted form of his life-long wish.
