Description
Kazuho Miyauchi is a 24 year old woman who serves as the sole teacher at the Asahigaoka Branch School, a small rural school where students of multiple grade levels share a single classroom. She is the eldest daughter of the Miyauchi family and has two younger sisters, Hikage and Renge.
Kazuho has dark violet hair that she typically styles in a ponytail with side bangs, and she almost always wears plain, practical clothing, often paired with a white lab coat while teaching. A distinctive physical trait is that her eyes are perpetually shown as closed, which is attributed to her near constant state of exhaustion.
Her personality appears marked by lethargy and a tendency toward laziness and irresponsibility. She is frequently seen sleeping at her desk during school hours, arriving late to class, or attempting to delegate her duties to her young students. This behavior, however, masks a deeper work ethic; her exhaustion is largely the result of balancing her teaching responsibilities with demanding physical labor helping her family on their rice plantations, work she has done since she was a student herself. Despite her sleepy exterior, she retains a quiet authority over her siblings, occasionally scolding her sister Hikage for misbehavior or begging for money.
As the only teacher responsible for students ranging from elementary to junior high school, Kazuho's approach to education relies heavily on self-directed study, with her direct teaching duties primarily involving correcting tests and preparing materials for multiple grade levels. She is known to use a xylophone as a school bell. Being the adult with the most free time in the small village of Asahigaoka, she often ends up as the default supervisor for the local children during various activities outside of school.
Kazuho maintains close relationships within the tight knit community. She shares a supervisory yet caring dynamic with her students, including her youngest sister Renge, who occasionally chides her for laziness but clearly trusts her. She has longstanding friendships with other village adults, such as Kaede Kagayama, who sometimes addresses her formally as sensei, and Yukiko Koshigaya, whom she seems to respect as a strict parent.
While she often appears to be looking for ways to avoid work, she demonstrates a quiet dedication to her family and students. She is shown to care for Renge when their parents are busy with outside work. When a situation demands it, such as during the class trip to Okinawa, she can display competence and a willingness to help, assisting students in distress despite her protests about her own fatigue. She is also proficient at driving a variety of vehicles, including trucks and tractors, a skill born from her upbringing on a farm. Her fashion sense is notably unfashionable and practical, often leading her to wear clothing that appears far too old for her age, such as a grandmother's hood or a ski mask better suited for a bank robber.
