TV-Series
Description
Hikage Miyauchi is a supporting character in Non Non Biyori, serving as the middle sister in the Miyauchi family between her eldest sister Kazuho and her youngest sister Renge. She is a first-year high school student who attends school in Tokyo, having left the rural Asahigaoka area to pursue her education in the city. Her birthday is December 7. Hikage has dark violet hair similar to Kazuho's shade and blue eyes that share the distinctive shape of Renge's eyes. During her childhood, she wore her hair in twin tails much like Renge, but after moving to Tokyo, she adopted a shorter above-the-shoulder cut, typically securing a small ponytail on the left side to cultivate a more urban look. Her casual fashion often includes shorts and boots, and her speaking style and demeanor are sometimes described as less traditionally feminine.
In terms of personality, Hikage is fundamentally kind and responsible, and she makes a genuine effort to keep her promises, including traveling back to Asahigaoka to visit her family as often as she can. However, she has a strong desire for validation and enjoys boasting about her life in Tokyo to the rural children, wanting to appear worldly and sophisticated. These efforts frequently backfire in comedic fashion, especially when she encounters Hotaru Ichijo, who has lived in Tokyo much longer and possesses genuine metropolitan knowledge that surpasses Hikage's own. On one occasion, after Hikage bragged about the Shinkansen, Hotaru casually mentioned traveling by airplane, something Hikage had never experienced, leaving her feeling deflated. Despite this, she continues to share stories about the city whenever she gets the chance.
A notable characteristic is Hikage's willingness to abandon her pride to achieve her goals, a trait that has earned her the nickname Dogeza Master. She is known to bow and beg fervently when she wants something, such as pleading to join a family trip to Okinawa. This trip, however, proved challenging for her due to her severe motion sickness. She suffers from a weak semicircular canal, causing her to experience extreme discomfort on airplanes, boats, and even when spun around, which limited her ability to enjoy activities like snorkeling during the vacation. Her misadventures often place her in situations where she endures suffering or humiliation, and she has a tendency to get caught doing odd or embarrassing things, such as using binoculars to secretly look at a picture Renge was drawing.
Hikage maintains several key relationships within the story. As Renge's older sister, she shows genuine care and plays well with her despite sometimes annoying her, and flashbacks reveal that she once brought a baby Renge to school when there was no one at home to care for her, resulting in chaos in the classroom. She shares a close and supportive friendship with Natsumi Koshigaya, frequently getting unintentionally swept into Natsumi's mischief and antics. Hikage also has a long history with Kaede Kagayama, the owner of the local candy store, having known her since childhood as neighbors and cousins. In fact, it was Hikage who gave Kaede her nickname Candy Store. She is particularly weak against Konomi Fujimiya, who often outmaneuvers her in various schemes. Her relationship with her eldest sister Kazuho is warm, as Kazuho watched over her during her elementary school years. Hikage originally appeared as a main character in the author Atto's previous work, Little Devil Meringue, and was later integrated into Non Non Biyori as Renge's sister due to the resemblance in their eye designs and the fact that her surname had not been established in the earlier work.
One of Hikage's notable abilities is her knowledge of nature and the countryside, which she claims to have passed on to Natsumi, teaching her various rural skills. This creates an interesting contrast, as she simultaneously tries to present herself as a city girl while still retaining deep familiarity with country life. Her character remains consistent across the series, appearing primarily during her visits to Asahigaoka, where her urban anecdotes provide frequent comedic contrast against the rural setting and the authentic urban experience of Hotaru. Despite her posturing and comedic failings, she ultimately demonstrates authentic care for her family and friends, making her a well-loved presence in the cast.
