TV-Series
Description
Hotaru Ichijo is one of the main characters of the series. She is an 11-year-old fifth-grade elementary school student who moves to the rural village of Asahigaoka from the bustling city of Tokyo due to her father's work transfer. Because her relatives live nearby, she had visited the area several times before, which helps her adapt to her new surroundings. Her given name, Hotaru, means firefly in Japanese.
In terms of appearance, Hotaru is notably tall for her age, standing at 161 centimeters, a height that often leads strangers and even her teacher to mistake her for a much older student, such as a teenager or an adult. She has neat black hair and brown, sharp-slanted eyes. Her physical maturity is a defining characteristic, as she towers over her peers, including the older Komari Koshigaya, leading to humorous situations where people are surprised to learn she is only in elementary school.
Hotaru possesses a multifaceted personality that shifts depending on her environment. In public and at school, she maintains a calm, responsible, and mature demeanor, often taking on the role of an "older sister" figure among her friends. She is polite, empathetic, and level-headed, which frequently leads her companions to rely on her in various situations. Despite this composed exterior, she freaks out easily when faced with unexpected stress or frightening circumstances, such as getting lost or being trapped. In contrast to her mature public persona, Hotaru displays a very childish and capricious side when at home with her parents, a part of herself she typically hides from her friends, who do not believe her when she mentions it.
A core aspect of Hotaru's character is her intense admiration and crush on her senior, Komari Koshigaya. Initially, she is drawn to Komari's petite and cute appearance, but this develops into a deeper affection rooted in a childhood incident where Komari bravely comforted a lost and crying Hotaru, despite being scared herself. Hotaru is often in a state of bliss when near Komari and dreams of petting her "little head". This obsession manifests in more tangible ways, such as her secret collection of numerous handmade Komari plushies that fill her room, which she has crafted with impressive sewing skills. She refers to Komari as "senpai" and is fiercely protective of her, even becoming distressed when Komari is teased or absent.
Her role in the story is that of a newcomer from the city, and through her curious and open-minded perspective, the audience is introduced to the unique, slow-paced charm and occasional peculiarities of rural life in Asahigaoka. She is full of curiosity about the countryside, from its unmanned vegetable stands to its abundant wildlife, and adapts with surprising ease, showing little fear of insects or geckos that might disturb others. Her ability to find joy in the simple, everyday discoveries of the village makes her a perfect lens for the series.
Hotaru’s key relationships are central to her character. Beyond her close friendship with Komari, she forms strong bonds with her other classmates. She gets along well with the energetic Natsumi Koshigaya, often participating in outdoor activities like catching critters, and has been shown to be surprisingly strong, easily defeating Natsumi in an arm-wrestling match. She is the closest in age to the younger Renge Miyauchi, who affectionately gives her the nickname Hotarun. Her relationships also extend to village elders like Konomi Fujimiya and Kaede Kagayama as she becomes more integrated into the community. She also adopts a dog named Pechi in the second season, Non Non Biyori Repeat.
Throughout the series, Hotaru experiences a subtle but clear development. She gradually becomes more integrated into the village's rhythms and traditions, moving from a fascinated observer to a genuine participant. Her initial secret obsession with Komari becomes a more accepted, albeit still intense, part of her daily life. She learns to navigate various challenges, from participating in farming to handling nighttime hikes, all while balancing her mature and childish sides. While her screen time may diminish slightly in later story arcs, her presence and her unique bond with Komari remain a cornerstone of the narrative. Her notable abilities include exceptional sewing and crafting skills, which she uses to create elaborate dolls, and a surprising talent for robotics, as demonstrated when she mechanizes one of her Komari plushies into a walking robot for a school project. She is also a capable cook.
