Movie
Description
Kyuubei Yagyuu is the sole heir of the prestigious Yagyuu family, a clan that has served the shogunate for generations and runs a renowned swordsmanship school. Born female, she was raised as a male by her father and grandfather after her mother died in childbirth, because the family line required a male successor. This upbringing shaped her identity: she presents as a handsome, androgynous young samurai, wears an eyepatch over her left eye, and speaks using a masculine first‑person pronoun. Her name is a reference to the historical samurai Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi, with the kanji for kyu meaning nine.

In terms of personality, Kyuubei initially comes across as cold, serious, and aloof, a demeanor forged by intense training and the rigid code of the Yagyuu clan. She is a genius swordsman, praised as the greatest talent the family has ever produced, and is able to match or overwhelm veteran fighters such as Hijikata Toushirou and Sakata Gintoki. However, beneath that stoic exterior she has a softer, more vulnerable side that emerges through her deep attachment to Shimura Tae, her childhood friend. Kyuubei has harbored romantic feelings for Tae since they were young, and these feelings motivate many of her actions. During her first major storyline, the Yagyuu Arc, she attempted to force an engagement with Tae, but after being stopped she later settled into a friendly, protective relationship. She is extremely devoted to Tae, follows her everywhere, and is fiercely protective of her, even stepping in to ward off unwanted attention from characters like Kondou Isao.

Kyuubei’s upbringing also leaves her with a confusing sense of gender identity. She sometimes expresses longing to live more like a normal girl, yet she also feels comfortable with the masculine role imposed on her. Over the course of the series, she comes to terms with this ambiguity, eventually deciding to live simply as Yagyuu Kyuubei, without conforming strictly to either femininity or masculinity. This internal conflict is portrayed both seriously and comically, as she often takes things literally, reacts with exaggerated irritation when her bodyguard Toujou Ayumu suggests she wear gothic lolita outfits, and displays an automatic reflex of attacking any man who touches her. Despite her formidable skills, she has a silly, airheaded side that makes her a recurring source of comedy, especially when she takes Kagura’s random remarks at face value or competes with Katsura Kotarou for screen time.

Her role in Gintama: The Final Movie is as a supporting character who joins the large‑scale battle against the final antagonist, Utsuro, and the Tendoushuu forces. Alongside the Shinsengumi, the Kabukicho residents, and other allies, she fights to protect Edo. The film does not give her a separate subplot, but she appears as part of the assembled cast defending the terminal, using her exceptional combat ability to contribute to the battle. Her key relationships continue to inform her actions: her bond with Tae remains strong, and she maintains a respectful rivalry with swordsmen like Gintoki and Hijikata. Her bodyguard Ayumu is still overly protective of her, a dynamic that provides occasional comic relief even in the film’s more serious moments.

Development wise, Kyuubei has grown from a proud, confrontational antagonist into a loyal friend and reliable ally. She still struggles with her gender identity, but she has become more comfortable with herself and more open to emotional connections, particularly through her friendship with Tae. In the Final Movie, she does not undergo major new growth, but her presence reinforces the theme of unity among the diverse characters who come together to face the ultimate threat.

Notable abilities include her extraordinary swordsmanship, characterized by speed, precision, and strategic thinking. She is capable of holding her own against some of the strongest fighters in the series. She also has a unique reflex that causes her to instinctively lash out when touched by men, a quirk she sometimes consciously suppresses when necessary. Her determination to protect those she cares about, especially Tae, is a driving force behind her actions, and she proves herself willing to fight alongside any ally, regardless of past conflicts.
