Description
In the anime "Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock", the character Bardock is portrayed as a low-class Saiyan warrior and the father of the series' protagonist, Kakarot, who would later be known as Goku. The story presents a hypothetical scenario that diverges from his presumed death during the destruction of Planet Vegeta. Instead of perishing, Bardock is hurled backward through time due to a spatial-temporal distortion caused by the explosion of his home world, awakening on the planet Plant, which is the primitive, past version of what would eventually become Planet Vegeta.

Bardock's personality in this narrative is a blend of typical Saiyan traits and a burgeoning sense of protectiveness. He is initially presented as a pragmatic, battle-hardened, and somewhat cynical warrior. After being transported to the past, he displays a strong desire for isolation, rejecting the gratitude of the native Plant people he saves and retreating to a cave to be alone. He warns them not to pretend to know him or to claim that he rescued them. This behavior reflects his experience as a solitary soldier of the Frieza Force, unaccustomed to kindness or gratitude. Despite this gruff exterior, he is not entirely devoid of emotion. He is shown to be capable of forming a bond, albeit reluctantly, with a young native named Berry, who persistently brings him food. This connection, along with the memory of his fallen comrades, becomes a key motivator for his actions.

The primary motivation for Bardock shifts from simple survival to a deeply personal vendetta. When he confronts the story's antagonist, Chilled, he immediately mistakes the space pirate for his enemy, Frieza, due to their striking physical resemblance. This misidentification triggers his rage and desire for revenge against the tyrant who annihilated his race and comrades. However, his final transformation is catalyzed by a more immediate and selfless motivation. When Chilled attacks the defenseless Berry, Bardock is overcome with a furious rage that mirrors the anger he felt at the destruction of his people. This specific emotional trigger allows him to break through his limits and achieve the legendary Super Saiyan transformation for the first time.

In the story's role, Bardock serves as the accidental hero and the unwitting originator of a universal legend. After becoming a Super Saiyan, he uses his overwhelming power to defeat Chilled, driving him from the planet. The mortally wounded Chilled warns his subordinates to tell his descendants to beware of the golden-haired warriors, thus planting the seed of the Super Saiyan legend that would be passed down through generations to Frieza. Bardock's role is therefore pivotal, as his actions in the distant past directly influence the fears and political decisions of the Frieza clan centuries later. His fate after the battle is unknown, but it is presumed he lived out the rest of his life on the planet Plant.

Key relationships define his development. His relationship with Berry, the young native who shows him unconditional kindness, is central to his character arc. Berry's persistent care helps to slowly erode Bardock's hardened shell, and his endangerment provides the final emotional spark for the Super Saiyan transformation. His relationship with Ipana, Berry's father and the village doctor, is also significant as he is the one who heals Bardock's wounds. The antagonistic relationship with Chilled is a direct parallel to his hatred for Frieza, allowing him to confront a proxy for his past trauma.

Notable abilities displayed by Bardock in this special include all the standard powers of a Saiyan warrior, such as flight, superhuman strength, speed, durability, and the ability to project energy blasts. He uses a technique known as the Final Spirit Cannon, which is a powerful concentrated energy wave. His most significant ability, achieved during the climax of the story, is the transformation into a Super Saiyan. In this state, his power increases dramatically, his hair turns gold, and his eyes become a distinct teal-green color. As a Super Saiyan, he is easily able to overpower Chilled, who had previously been dominating him in his base form, demonstrating a massive leap in combat ability.
