Description
Chilled is a character from the short manga and anime adaptation Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, where he serves as the primary antagonist. He is a space pirate and a member of the same unnamed race as Frieza, specifically identified as an ancestor of Frieza, King Cold, and Cooler. Chilled holds the position of captain of the Chilled Pirates and is a leader within the Planet Trade Organization, continuing the family tradition of conquering and selling planets across the universe.
In terms of his background, Chilled lived many generations before the main events of Dragon Ball. He is shown leading a campaign of terror across the galaxy, attacking planets to subjugate their populations and plunder their resources. During the events of the story, he sends two of his soldiers, Tobi and Cabira, to conquer Planet Plant, a world that would later be renamed Planet Vegeta. When those soldiers are killed by the Saiyan Bardock, who was hurled back in time, Chilled decides to investigate the planet himself.
Chilled's personality closely mirrors that of his more famous descendant, Frieza, though with some distinct differences. He is portrayed as ruthless, arrogant, and deeply sadistic, showing a particular fondness for instilling despair and fear in his victims before destroying them. He has no qualms about killing anyone who displeases him, including his own soldiers. In the manga, he immediately kills one of his men by impaling him simply for standing in the way. He is also childish and prone to fits of rage, especially when a battle turns against him. When overwhelmed by Bardock's power, Chilled enters a state of denial, refusing to accept that anyone in the universe could be stronger than him. However, unlike many of his descendants who care only for their family's reputation, Chilled displays a genuine concern for his bloodline. As he lies mortally wounded, his final act is to order his subordinates to warn his family about the threat of the Super Saiyan.
Chilled's motivations are largely rooted in greed and domination. He seeks to expand his territory and wealth by any means necessary. On Planet Plant, his immediate goal is to acquire a special healing medicine used by the native Plant people, which he desires for his army. When his plans are thwarted, his motivation shifts to a more personal vendetta against Bardock, culminating in an attempt to destroy the entire planet out of spite when he realizes he cannot control it.
Within the story, Chilled's role is that of a catalyst. His confrontation with Bardock on past-Planet Plant leads directly to the Saiyan's transformation into a Super Saiyan, the first time this form appears in the timeline. Chilled is initially able to overpower Bardock with ease, but after he severely wounds a young native named Berry who had befriended Bardock, the Saiyan's rage triggers the legendary transformation. In his Super Saiyan state, Bardock completely overwhelms Chilled, who desperately unleashes a powerful Death Ball in a final attempt to destroy the planet. Bardock deflects the attack, mortally wounding the tyrant and sending him hurtling into space.
Key relationships define Chilled's role. His primary enemy is Bardock, whom he initially toys with but ultimately fears. He commands an army of soldiers and has a notable interaction with the native Berry, whose injury at Chilled's hands serves as the emotional trigger for Bardock's transformation. His relationship with his own family, though unseen, is significant, as his dying warning to them about the golden-haired warrior solidifies the legend of the Super Saiyan that would haunt Frieza for generations.
In terms of development, Chilled remains a static character who does not learn or grow from his encounter. His arrogance remains until his defeat, which he faces with fear and desperation rather than acceptance. Unlike his descendants, Chilled does not demonstrate any ability to transform into higher forms. His appearance strongly resembles the first form of Frieza, with a primarily purple and orange color scheme, and it is believed by viewers that he may be incapable of transforming, or that his form is his final state.
Chilled possesses several notable abilities that mark him as an extraordinarily powerful being for his era. He demonstrates superhuman strength, speed, and durability, along with the ability to fly and survive in the vacuum of space. His signature techniques include the Death Razor, a pink energy wave fired from his finger that causes a large explosion upon impact, and the Death Ball, a massive sphere of energy capable of destroying an entire planet. Chilled also possesses a prehensile tail that he can stretch to great lengths to strike his enemies. Despite his power, which allowed him to easily defeat the base-form Bardock, he was completely outclassed by the Super Saiyan transformation. His power level is generally estimated to be comparable to, or slightly less than, Frieza's first form. Chilled's ultimate legacy is not one of conquest, but of fear; his dying message to his family ensured that the legend he helped create would lead directly to the destruction of Planet Vegeta and the Saiyan race at the hands of Frieza years later.
