Philippe Ariotti
Description
Philippe Ariotti is a French actor and singer widely recognized for his extensive work in voice acting, particularly in anime. Born on August 11, 1941, in Ankara, Turkey, he initially pursued a career in lyric and dramatic arts, performing in numerous operettas and theatrical productions across France from the 1960s onwards. His background includes creating roles in stage productions such as Un violon sur le toit and performing at renowned venues like the Opéra Comique and the Théâtre du Châtelet.
Ariotti's entry into the field of dubbing occurred in the late 1980s after being introduced to the discipline by his friend, fellow actor Pierre Trabaud. His vocal abilities quickly led to his first major anime roles in the seminal series Dragon Ball, where he voiced characters including Oolong, Yajirobé, and Piccolo Daimaō. He is most famous for his long-standing association with the Dragon Ball franchise, providing the French voices for two of its most iconic characters, Piccolo and Freezer. He has reprised these roles across numerous series and films, from Dragon Ball Z in the early 1990s to Dragon Ball Super and the feature films Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Beyond his celebrated work in the Dragon Ball universe, his voice acting portfolio includes a wide array of roles. He is the voice of Kazuo Yamashita in the series Kengan Ashura, Jabi in Sabikui Bisco, and Jean-Jacques Serrault in The Piano Forest. Earlier in his career, he also voiced multiple characters, such as Akru, Kaa, and Tabaqui, in the anime adaptation The Jungle Book: Shōnen Mowgli. In addition to animation, he has lent his voice to live-action productions, notably succeeding his friend Roger Carel as the French voice of David Suchet in the long-running television series Hercule Poirot beginning in 2013.
Ariotti's career is also marked by his expertise in cinema history. A cinephile from a young age, he was a laureate of the television game show Monsieur Cinéma in 1970. He is a specialist in pre-war French cinema, a lecturer, a film club animator, and an author. His written works include contributions to cinema publications, and he co-founded the Tiffany's record label. Until 2016, he also co-hosted a radio program about cinema on Radio Courtoisie.
