Description
Babidi is a major antagonist in Dragon Ball Z Kai, appearing as an alien wizard of immense magical power and cruel ambition. He is the son of Bibidi, the wizard originally responsible for creating the demonic entity Majin Buu. Babidi harbors a deep-seated grudge against the Supreme Kai, who defeated his father, and his primary motivation is to carry on his father's legacy by resurrecting the dormant Majin Buu to conquer the universe.
In terms of personality, Babidi is depicted as arrogant, sadistic, and utterly ruthless. He displays no loyalty or gratitude toward his underlings, treating them as disposable tools to be discarded once they have served their purpose. He is also a coward at heart, relying on his magical barriers and minions to protect him while showing little physical courage in direct combat. Despite his magical prowess, he has a foolish tendency to insult and threaten Majin Buu, a being vastly more powerful than himself, failing to recognize the danger of his own cruelty. He takes genuine delight in the suffering of others, gleefully ordering the destruction of entire cities and their populations simply to lure out his enemies.
Babidi's role in the story is central to the Majin Buu arc. He arrives on Earth with his spaceship and a host of controlled minions, including the Demon King Dabura, to harvest the immense energy required to break the seal on Majin Buu's egg. To do this, he sends his brainwashed human servants, Spopovich and Yamu, to the World Martial Arts Tournament to steal energy from the powerful fighters there. Once he obtains enough energy, he resurrects Majin Buu, unleashing a cataclysmic threat upon the universe. He also plays a pivotal role in manipulating Vegeta. Sensing the pride and darkness within the Saiyan prince's heart, Babidi uses his magic to take control of him, transforming him into Majin Vegeta, which leads to a fateful battle with Goku that provides the final burst of energy needed for Buu's revival.
His key relationships are defined by control and abuse. He holds Dabura as his most powerful and loyal servant, yet ultimately has Buu kill him without hesitation when he is no longer useful. His relationship with Majin Buu is one of master and slave, but Babidi rules through fear and threats of resealing, unlike his father who used rewards. Babidi constantly belittles and orders Buu around, threatening to imprison him again if he disobeys. This abusive treatment, combined with encouragement from Goku, ultimately leads to his downfall when Buu rebels against him. As a character, Babidi shows little to no development or redeeming qualities. He begins as a scheming, cruel wizard and ends the same way, failing to learn any lesson from his mistakes. His arrogance only grows with Buu's power, and he remains convinced of his own superiority until the moment of his death.
Notable abilities include powerful sorcery focused on mind control, allowing him to invade the minds of those with evil in their hearts and bend them to his will, marked by a distinct M on their foreheads. He can use a spell chanted as Papparapa to teleport his minions and enemies to different planets or environments that favor his fighters. For defense, he conjures a spherical barrier so strong it can withstand attacks from fighters as powerful as Majin Vegeta and Majin Buu himself. His Explosion Sorcery allows him to lock onto a target with his gaze and cause their body to rapidly expand until it bursts apart, a fate he inflicts on his own servant Spopovich and various innocent bystanders who fail to provide him with information. Despite these formidable magical abilities, Babidi is physically very weak without his magic. In the end, when Majin Buu throttles him to prevent him from casting any spells, the wizard is helpless and is killed almost instantly.
