Description
Ryō Kobayashi is a high school student afflicted by a terminal illness that forces him to relinquish his passion for basketball. This situation draws him into contact with Tomoya Sugisaki and Aoi Harukawa, as the three are united by the local legend of the Summer Ghost—a spirit named Ayane said to appear to those nearing death when fireworks are set off at an abandoned airfield.

During their first encounter with Ayane, it becomes clear she is visible only to people close to death, including Ryō due to his condition. He displays a direct and occasionally harsh manner, openly criticizing Tomoya for failing to grasp the severity of his physical and emotional struggles when initially asked to help locate Ayane’s body.

After receiving comfort from Aoi, his outlook softens and he agrees to aid in the search. They eventually find Ayane’s remains in a landfill. Following this event, Ryō resolves to survive long enough to see spring one last time. He ultimately passes away due to his illness.

One year later, his spirit appears to Tomoya and Aoi at the same airfield, where he encourages them to embrace life fully.
