Description
Mafuyu Oribe is one of the main heroines of the story and a student at St. Mihailov Academy. She is an orphan who lost her parents in an accident and was subsequently taken in and raised by Yuu Yamanobe, the former chairman of the academy, alongside his only daughter, Tomo Yamanobe. After Yuu’s mysterious disappearance, Mafuyu and Tomo began enduring hostile treatment from their classmates due to their loss of status, which forced them to live together in the school dormitory.
In terms of appearance, Mafuyu has a slender, athletic build with dark maroon hair and violet eyes. Her physique is shaped from her time as a member of the school’s kendo club, a pursuit she eventually abandoned to focus on protecting Tomo and managing their household. She has a responsible and approachable aura, though she possesses a slight complex about her bust size, which is average in comparison to some of her more well-endowed peers like Tomo.
Mafuyu is defined by her strong sense of responsibility, courage, and quick-witted nature. She is fiercely protective of Tomo, often rushing to her aid and facing adversity head-on. Despite her own insecurities, she handles challenges with quiet strength and a sharp tongue. She is also a nurturing individual with a knack for cooking; her borscht is particularly noted for impressing others. While she is often exasperated by the shameless and unpredictable antics of Alexander Nikolaevich Hell, her strong spirit and direct manner make her an effective foil to him, frequently acting as the grounded "straight man" in chaotic situations.
Her primary motivation is the protection of Tomo Yamanobe, whom she views as a younger sister. This deep bond and sense of duty stem from gratitude for the home she was given by Tomo’s father. After Yuu’s disappearance, Mafuyu resolved to shield Tomo from the hostile treatment they both received, and this mission drives much of her early involvement in the story. Her meeting with Alexander "Sasha" Nikolaevich Hell, a powerful Qwaser, introduces her to a larger supernatural conflict, and she eventually becomes determined to fight alongside him rather than remain a bystander.
Mafuyu’s role in the story evolves from that of a loyal guardian to an active participant in the war between Qwasers. She starts as a normal student using her kendo skills to defend Tomo. After helping Sasha, she becomes embroiled in his mission and eventually agrees to act as his "Maria," a partner who provides him with soma, a life-sustaining energy, to fuel his powers. Her significance grows considerably when she becomes a host for the Holy Sword Maiden, a powerful relic that is divided between her and Tomo. This makes her a primary target for adversaries, but it also grants her unique abilities that she learns to control through rigorous training.
Key relationships define Mafuyu’s character arc. Her bond with Tomo Yamanobe is the most important, characterized by deep familial love and a guardian’s devotion. Her relationship with Alexander Nikolaevich Hell begins with antagonism and frequent arguments due to his behavior but gradually develops into one of mutual trust, deep respect, and romantic feelings, though their progress is relatively slow and innocent. She also forms important alliances with other characters like Aoi Kuchiba and Ekaterina Kurae, the latter of whom puts her through unusual training regimens to help her control her abilities.
Throughout the story, Mafuyu undergoes significant development. Initially a capable but normal girl, she is forced to confront supernatural threats far beyond her experience. She struggles with feelings of helplessness but resolves to become stronger, undergoing harsh training with a mentor known as Big Mam to wield the Holy Sword Maiden’s power. Her journey transforms her from a steadfast guardian into an active warrior. She even survives a curse placed on her heart thanks to the compassion of another character. Her personal evolution is marked by her growing confidence in her own unique abilities and her acceptance of her role as a fighter and partner.
Mafuyu possesses notable abilities grounded in her kendo training, which makes her a proficient swordswoman who typically wields a bamboo sword with skill. Her true power, however, comes from being the host of the Holy Sword Maiden. This power grants her the ability to dismantle elemental bindings and makes her indispensable in battles against other Qwasers. Through training, she learns to summon a veiled entity named La Pucelle to aid her in combat. A unique and often chaotic aspect of her powers is tied to her role as a Maria; as the Sword of Maria, her body can channel global soma energy, causing drastic and temporary fluctuations in her physical form to amplify her power before returning to normal after the energy is expended.
