Description
Friederich Tanner is a major antagonist from the anime and manga series Seikon no Qwaser. He is a man of aristocratic Prussian descent, characterized by his blonde hair and sophisticated yet menacing demeanor.
Known across Europe by the fearsome nickname the Double-Headed Crest Maker, Tanner is an international terrorist who operates with a grand and destructive political vision. Unlike the Qwasers who derive their powers from specific elemental manipulations, Tanner is a sorcerer who holds strange and versatile magical abilities. His core motivation is a deep-seated belief that the current state of Europe is weak and miserable. He seeks to destabilize and ultimately collapse the European Community, with the goal of reviving the Holy Roman Empire under German leadership. His actions are driven by a fanatical nationalism and an arrogant, overconfident belief in his own superiority and strategic genius.
In the story, Tanner operates largely from the shadows, orchestrating a complex game where he manipulates both the protagonists' organization, Athos, and the rival group, the Adepts, using them as mere pawns to achieve his true objective. He is the older brother of Georg Tanner, and the two brothers often work in concert. Tanner’s ultimate goal is to acquire the Theotokos, a powerful and legendary icon. To this end, he personally infiltrates St. Mihailov Academy disguised as a teacher, putting his plans into motion from within. He uses his powers to manipulate key characters, such as using Mafuyu Oribe and a crest-infused Hana Katsuragi in an attempt to unseal the sanctuary where the Theotokos is hidden. Throughout the series, he comes into direct conflict with the main protagonist, Sasha, as well as other key fighters like Ekaterina Kurae and Tasuku Fujiomi. In one notable confrontation, he attempts to take Tomo Yamanobe as a consolation prize after his primary scheme is foiled.
Tanner experiences a significant development following his apparent defeat. After being seemingly killed by Sasha, Katja, and Tasuku, he demonstrates his cunning by managing to place his soul inside a magical circuit. This circuit is then forcefully inserted into his slave, Edgar, who is the host of an ancient and immensely powerful circuit known as the Golden Noah. This allows Tanner to survive and gain control of this devastating new power.
Tanner's notable abilities are extensive and varied, stemming from his sorcery rather than Qwaser powers. He is capable of creating force fields for defense and spatial manipulation, including opening portals for teleportation or surprise attacks. His signature power involves the use of tarot cards, which he can use to seal objects or living beings, teleport anything, and summon creatures such as large tiger-like beasts and soul-devouring Succubi. He is also a master of mind control, implanting "Puppet Circuits" into others to take over their minds or even reanimate the dead to serve him. When he later wields the Golden Noah from within Edgar's body, his power increases dramatically. This circuit grants him reality-warping abilities, causality manipulation, and the power to summon alternate versions of himself from infinite parallel realities, making him an extraordinarily difficult opponent to kill. Despite his immense power, his arrogance and the time it takes to activate his more implausible reality shifts remain his primary weaknesses.
