TV-Series
Description
Joshua Phrygianos is a young man of eighteen years who serves as a candidate among the Adepts, an organization of Qwasers. He is a notable figure within the series because his personality and circumstances stand in stark contrast to many of his ruthless peers.
Joshua was born in a small, impoverished village located in a region between Europe and Asia, an area frequently ravaged by conflict. He is the eldest of five siblings, but due to the ongoing wars, he lost several of his younger brothers and sisters, leaving only himself and his younger sister, Jita Phrygianos, as survivors. This traumatic upbringing and his role as a protective older brother are the core influences on his character.
His personal history is defined by his status as a Qwaser who manipulates the element roentgenium, a synthetic element with the atomic number 111. Because roentgenium does not occur in nature and has an incredibly short activation time of only a few microseconds, it is considered virtually useless in combat. Consequently, Joshua was often looked down upon, mistreated, and labeled as a third-rate or surplus Qwaser by other Adept candidates. He lives in poverty and dreams of rising through the ranks, both to provide for his sister and to prove his worth to those who once scorned him.
Despite these hardships, Joshua possesses a fundamentally kind and caring nature. He is neither brutal nor inclined toward the mass murder that characterizes many of his would-be comrades. In fact, he is a warm-hearted individual who is deeply devoted to his family. This is most evident in his relationship with his sister Jita, who publicly appears to look down on him but secretly holds a deep admiration for him. Joshua desperately wants to be a respectable and reliable brother, though his attempts often end up embarrassing her instead. When Jita is captured, his devotion drives him to take extreme measures to secure her rescue.
His personality is outwardly flamboyant and self-important. He refers to himself using a grandiose first-person pronoun, usually translated as "this body," and constantly boasts of being a genius. However, this arrogance is a front that hides his insecurities and his genuine honesty, which ensures that few people truly dislike him. He is also known for his endearing clumsiness, particularly concerning matters of intimacy. Joshua has no tolerance for erotic situations and is extremely sensitive to the topic, to the point where he can faint or suffer a nosebleed at the mere sight of nudity. This trait proves to be a significant hindrance, as Qwasers typically require a specific ritual to draw out their power. His humorous side is further displayed in his habit of mispronouncing the name of the girl Tomo Yamanobe as Akari, and continuing to do so even after being corrected.
Joshua is remarkably skilled in domestic arts, being an excellent cook and proficient in sewing and other handicrafts. These practical skills, combined with his fundamentally good-hearted and unpretentious nature, make him easy to get along with and earn him allies despite his initially antagonistic role.
In the story, Joshua first appears as an antagonist who infiltrates an academy alone with a plan to use Tomo Yamanobe as bait to lure out the protagonist, Sasha, and Mafuyu Oribe. His goal is to get ahead and exact revenge on those who mistreated him. However, his lack of tolerance for the intimate methods required to extract soma causes his plan to fail spectacularly. Instead of using Tomo, he is moved by her kindness and persuaded by her words to abandon his scheme. After this encounter, he steps back from his role as an active Adept candidate and later becomes a servant or butler to Magnolia, where he takes care of Tomo for a while.
The most significant turning point for Joshua occurs when his younger sister Jita is taken to a secret base. Desperate to save her, he makes a dangerous bargain with the Golden Qwaser, Friedrich Turner. In exchange for the power to rescue his sister, Joshua agrees to sacrifice his own lifespan. He receives a forbidden ability carved into his right arm that allows him to manipulate not just roentgenium, but the entire Group 11 elements, which include gold, silver, and copper. This power comes at the cost of his life force and ultimately leads to his arm being severed in a confrontation with Sasha. Although he loses his original power, his life is saved by his sister. He is later sheltered by an ally named Yuri and, after a series of events, joins Sasha's group to fight against the Kousei Project.
Joshua's notable abilities initially are limited to the manipulation of roentgenium, an element so unstable it is useless in direct combat. His true strength lies in his resourcefulness, his survival instincts, and his sheer determination. After his bargain with the Golden Qwaser, he gains a far more formidable power set, allowing him to control gold and other related elements. He demonstrates the ability to block powerful attacks with this new strength, marking a significant transformation from a comedic outcast into a capable fighter willing to sacrifice himself for his family.
