Description
Astarte is a young girl who appears in The Qwaser of Stigmata, distinguished by her status as the highest-ranking figure among the Adepts, where she holds the revered title of Matriarch or Supreme Mother. Despite her significant authority within the Adept hierarchy, she has the innocent appearance and demeanor of a small child, with blue eyes and blonde hair. Her physical age is approximately eight years old, though this changes as the story progresses.
In terms of personality, Astarte is characterized by her gentle, kind, and compassionate nature. She displays a childlike warmth, particularly in her relationship with her beloved pet dog, Seren, with whom she spends much of her free time playing. This tenderness extends to her interactions with others, as she shows genuine care for her companions and is willing to act on their behalf even when it places her in danger. Her motivations are rooted in compassion and loyalty, as she demonstrates a clear willingness to protect those she values.
Astarte plays a pivotal role in the story's central conflicts through her unique position among the Adepts. One of her most significant actions is blessing Tomo Yamanobe with a kiss, an act that renders all Adepts incapable of harming Tomo. This blessing inadvertently saves the life of another character, Zita, who had been sentenced to execution after a falling out with a man named Georg. This event establishes Astarte as a figure whose power has profound consequences for the fate of those around her.
Her key relationships are central to her character development. She shares a special bond with Tomo Yamanobe, whom she protects through her blessing. Her connection to her dog Seren provides one of the few glimpses of normal childhood joy in her life. Additionally, her life becomes intertwined with Zita and Joshua Phrygianos, as her safety is later used as leverage against them.
Throughout the narrative, Astarte undergoes significant ordeals that shape her development. After the fall of the Adepts' base known as the Flower Garden, she is kidnapped alongside Tomo Yamanobe and taken to the headquarters of a project referred to as the Kami-Nari Plan or Deification Project. There, her captors forcibly accelerate her aging, maturing her body to the same physical age as characters like Mafuyu Oribe to serve in the role of Supreme Mother. When Tomo volunteers to take her place, Astarte becomes a hostage, confined to a room and used as a bargaining chip against Zita and Joshua. She is eventually rescued by Mafuyu Oribe and the others, an event that demonstrates the emotional investment the main characters have in her safety.
Regarding her notable abilities, Astarte possesses the spiritual authority and power inherent to her rank as the Supreme Mother. Her most explicitly demonstrated ability is the protective blessing she bestows through a kiss, which creates an irrevocable safeguard preventing any Adept from harming the recipient. This power reflects her symbolic importance within the Adept organization and establishes her as a character whose actions carry lasting magical and political weight. Despite the harsh circumstances she endures, including forced maturation and captivity, Astarte retains the kindness and loyalty that define her true character.
